Finite? No it's really quite simple. You and the others in here say they want no bullshit. You and many in here say they base their opinions on the facts associated with science. Well guess what? Science say that matter cannot be made from non matter. That means the beginning; with current science; something or someone put that matter there that is outside of matter. I bring up Denny and his inability to associate plasma not being matter; cause many "atheists" don't get the simple rule. Matter cannot exist without matter creating it. The funny thing is Denny even said that all the matter in the universe always existed; which is a total contradiction to the science we know now. Then the vanilla gorilla tells me I have made up stories; but he ignores what science says is impossible. Matter cannot exist unless it is created by matter. It's a scientific law. It can't be proven otherwise. And all of you claim that you welcome any idea of a creator; yet you ignore the scientific law? Lol
There is historical evidence that there was a Jesus of Nazareth that existed. So yeah it's really funny of its ignorance.
there is no scientific evidence there was a beginning at all in the sense you mean. you have to accept that nobody knows what the situation was at the big bang, knobody knows what caused it or if our notion of causality is applicable, nobody knows what can or does exist external to our local spacetime that emerged from the big bang (assuming it actually did), and nobody knows what properties something external could have including anything related to finiteness. as far as we know a multiverse if one exists could be causally and/or spatially infinite. for that matter we don't even know for sure if our local spacetime is finite or not. the expansion we see could just be part of a much larger hidden structure. this subject is almost entirely speculative, and scientists readily admit that. theists do not. they are the ones who claim to know what happened. a theist who admits he is speculating is an agnostic.
Oh dear, you're back at it trying to call yourself an atheist as long as you can change the definition of atheist to suit your needs. The funny thing here is that you you want to ridicule the religious about already having their minds made up, even though you already have your mind made up. If you don't have your mind made up, you aren't an atheist. Further, if you're an atheist, then your position is a pretty difficult one since it is impossible to prove the lack of existence of something.
Short answer to original question is we don't currently know. Really, though, there is no "edge" to the universe because the universe (or multiverses if they exist) would be all there is. This is the difference between science and religion. Religion claims to have all answers but answers nothing, just says god did it, end of discussion. How boring. Amazingly, creationists think that if you say "I don't know" you are disproving all modern science AND proving the bible is literally true! Logic is not their strong point. Science says we don't know, and tries to find answers, which then give rise to dozens of new questions. This is how knowledge grows. So much more interesting and useful.
You are spot on with most of your post. But science actually is in the same boat. I don't know if you've seen the "universe" series; which doesn't have this disclaimer you suggest that "they don't know". In fact most is laid out as a matter of fact. They are explaining everything like it is 100% accurate. This pisses me off probably as much as you get pissed when a creationist says they have all the answers. For me; I don't know the full details and say "in my opinion, this is what I think is right". People are being brain washed from both sides. That's a fact. Prime example is the kid vanilla gorilla saying things are matter of fact in science; which is hardly accurate. In fact it's about as speculative as the bible thumper saying they have all the answers. I don't have all the answers; but I do know what I've studied already. And what I've studied is mass, energy or matter must have always existed in order for a non-god creation. Science has taught me that mass, energy or matter cannot be created without mass, energy or matter creating it. This is the "question" that cannot be answered. Instead science says "well maybe the laws of science as we know it didn't exist in the beginning." That's a crock of shit!
Yes, if they've decided to modify the definition of "atheist" to mean what they want it to mean so they can call themselves an atheist. Being able to call yourself an atheist is becoming so hip. You atheists jump all over the religious about changing what their beliefs are so they can continue to have their faith, yet atheists do the same thing by modifying the definition of what an atheist actually is.
This is actually truth. What the reality is "you choose your faith". I hear many say that they will believe in god if god himself presents himself to them. There will be a day that happens. When it does; it will be too late.
