And it doesn't matter how those teams got those stars. The comment was that all the stars that matter are in the large markets and that is not true.

I'm not sure the NBA views Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis in the same pool as Kobe, LeBron, DWade and Howard type players.

Pretty much my line of thinking, too. I know it's probably because I've lived long enough to have seen better basketball, more compelling storylines, and more entertaining players. If I was fresh to basketball, I wonder if I'd be smitten with the current NBA the way I was in the 80s and 90s? It doesn't help that a lot players from the next generation of stars either got hurt or never developed.

That's simply the "things were better in the old days" mentality.

Remember when we made the playoffs 26 straight years, before the Oregonian talked knowledgable Portland fans into blowing it up and getting rid of Bob Whitsitt?

What happened to all you experts who used to say that you were bored with one-and-out every year, and a lowly .600 team can't win the championship, so you'd rather be the worst team for one year, so that we will inevitably return to the playoffs the very next year?

Maybe. Can you point out anything redeeming about this season, though? There's the Heat streak. Lebron's awesomeness. Possibly the early budding of future All-stars in Lillard and Wall....maybe Faried? Harden's breakout. That's all I can come up with. Not a lot to bring in new casual fans. Contrast that to the NFL. Night and day.

Basketball and baseball (not a fan) only attract more dedicated sports fans because of the volume of games. With the NFL, there's one day a week games are on, and you don't even have to watch to know exactly what happened from the highlights and how much people with talk about it.

What are examples of regular seasons from the 80s or 90s that had all these redeeming qualities you seem to speak of?

I think the difference comes down to rivalries and star players you specifically tune into watch. Non-basketball fans knew who Jordan, Bird, Magic, Shaq, Kobe were. I could probably ask my dad (no interest in basketball whatsoever) and he might know who Lebron is today. No one outside of that. He'd occasionally stop what he was doing to watch those guys on the TV for 20 minutes or so, but he wouldn't take anytime for players today. And rivalries are missing today. I'd watch the Lakers/Celtics or Heat/Knicks or Bulls/Pistons back "in the day", but there's no performance enhancing rivalries that exist now. Not that I would go out of my way to tune in for. Hopefully, the Thunder and Heat can develop one, but they're not there yet. The Clippers/Lakers had some promise, but that fizzled out. Tough time for the league imo.

Whitisitt was the best GM Portland ever had.Geoff Petrie was good but he wasn't as ballsy as Whitsitt.

The Bucks had ZERO chance against Miami and I'm sure the NBA likes you to think that they did. I think this is really to bad and doesn't make the NBA fun to watch.
