I know we keep our pick if we draft 12th and higher. And that seems almost like a slam dunk at this point. However.... What if we decided to give our pick to CHA anyways? I am under the impression that this is legal to do if we decide to. I am not saying we will decide to do this however (just random speculation). So what if we did decide to give it to them when would we have to do it by? Would we have to do it at the Lottery? Could we wait until the day of the draft? What if we could even wait until we were on the clock? Say we wanted to keep our pick only if one of two players dropped in the draft. 1 drops so we keep our pick and take him. Or neither drops so we decide to give up our pick right now to CHA instead of reaching for a guy. I know this is VERY unlikely to happen (and not saying it should happen) but if it did happen when do you think we would have to decide by? Just something to speculate on during a slow forum day.... If you didn't like the guys who dropped to us would you give the pick up (assuming you couldn't trade it to someone else) to CHA to fulfill our obligation?
I don't know about the rules, but I want the pick. I am hopeful we will be better next year. Sure this year's draft may be weak at the top, but I still think a lottery pick (With a small fraction of a chance to move into the top 3) is better than a non-lottery pick next year or the years after. Sure we could suck again next year, but then we would still get our draft pick. Eventually we will not suck! Not sure what year, but it will happen. And at that point Charlotte can have the pick they traded for.
Just to be clear, I want to keep the pick as well. I would rather give CHA our pick next year. Just saying if POR felt there were no guys that would really help them that at their slot then would they consider something like this? And they could really mess with people's minds if they could wait until they are on the clock (I don't think the rules would allow it but don't know of a specific one that blocks it at this point).
What are the protections on the pick moving forward? I think a free and clear non-lottery pick next year is equal to or better than a lottery pick this year and the possibility of losing the pick in a much deeper draft next year.
Link? Not saying that isn't true but I would love to see something official on this. CHA doesn't have to agree if we get 13th. It is automatic. 12th of course is better than 13th, don't see the dispute.
If we get the 12th pick, it is our pick. In order to send it to Charlotte, it'd be a new, separate trade that they'd have to agree to. They agreed to a specific protection. We can't just say meh, here you go, we don't want this one.
I not disagreeing with this premise but there is nothing (that I can find) that says that at all. I don't recall where I heard it but I heard we could give our pick to CHA this year if we wanted to get out of our obligation even if we did get the 12th pick. I asked Charcoal for a link because he sounded very sure of himself but nothing was provided yet.
I'd square up with CHA, considering this weak draft & weak free agent crop, so we have assets further down the track when our team has evolved more. We may be able to use that pick in a trade where there are better players available for sign and trades - or simply use it in a better draft.

On second thought, I retract that. We would have no pick to offer to make the trade happen, until after the trade is over. The trade begets our ownership of a pick to trade, which begets the trade. A produces B, without which A cannot exist. It's like using a time machine to go back in time and kill your parents. It's logically impossible. Damn, this is good stuff.
