I think Sheed was a better perimeter player than Aldridge, and even Sheed struggled at SF. I'm worried about trying to pair Smith with Aldridge. It reminds me too much of Zach and Abdur-Rahim.
I think I'm right. http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2012/06/traded-player-exception.html In non-simultaneous deals, a team can trade away a single player without immediately taking salary back in return. The team then has up to one year in which it can acquire multiple players whose salaries amount to no more than the traded player's salary (plus $100K).
We can trade them Matthews for Howard, with our cap space. We can not trade Matthews to someone with cap space for nothing, and then use the TPE created along with Batum to trade for Howard.
This is right. We have the cap space, so we can trade them Matthews, Batum and absorb whatever is left over. We can't send them a trade exception in the deal is where this is all getting confusing.
Yes in your scenario, Matthews makes around 7.8 million. We have the cap space to absorb 12.2 million for the 20 mil contract for Howard. If that scenario takes place; then Lakers get Matthews and a 12.2 million TE. Now Lakers could use that TE for 1 player. They can't combine that exemption with a player to get a 20 mil per player.
That's right, but there's no traded player exception involved. It works for the Blazers because they're under the cap after the trade, or are with the 150% + $100,000 rule. It works for LA because there's no lower limit on the 150% + $100K rule
I don't think they would. They would get whatever we sent them and we would absorb the excess funds. I think where this is getting confusing is that Denny is saying we can't trade a player AND a TE for another player. In my scenario, we're sending them Matthews, Batum, and either absorbing the excess 4 million or sending them filler. I don't think a TE is involved at all.
I'm saying you can't trade two players for a player and a TE. Or two players for a TE. (Two TE's perhaps)
I think the only exception is draft picks. For example, the Heat traded the Cavs 4 picks and a TE for LBJ.
