I remember Jimmy the Greek in answering a question opined that plantation owners bred black slaves for specific physical traits the same as they did for race horses, to explain the presumed superiority of black athletes. Boom! Fired. I had to look up the Howard Cosell incident to refresh my memory. He said "look at that little monkey run" during a game. I put that on the same level of it's ok to call me, a white guy boy, but back in the day you could never refer to a black guy as boy. Innocent but unfortunate choice of words on Howard's part. Boom! Retired!

As much as I favor equal rights for all, including the LGBT community, you cannot compare what black people went through to what gay people go through now.

Like, "If I came out, I might get fired" vs. strung up on the nearest tree branch.

Well, there was that gay guy who got tied to the back of a pickup truck in Texas and drug to his death down the highway. And another guy who got tied to a fence and beaten to death. And that lesbian who was murdered for pretending to be a guy in Wyoming or some such place. All within recent memory.

But yes, I agree with your point. Not just during slave days, but well into the 1960s it was downright dangerous to be black in Amerika.

Agreed. I find it sad when I hear the comparisons. Example, some are saying Jason Collins is a modern day Jackie Robinson. This is degrading to what Robinson actually did. IMHO.

I'd venture to guess there's been more than one killing this way.

Robinson was a true hero, but lost in the story is Branch Rickey's courage. I would guess he got as many death threats as Jackie did.

Wrong. Adultery is illegal in most states, and in most countries around the world. Do you live under a rock, or does it just seem that way?

Again, incest is illegal in every state and every country around the world. It's embarrassing arguing with you because you know very little, and yet you spout off like you do.

Collins is not going to have the problems Robinson had, but will encounter some. With time it will not be a big deal for anyone to be gay in sports just as it is not a big deal to not be white. Kudos to him for helping society progress.

For any of the Christians (like Broussard) having a problem with this, do you have just as much contempt with all of the other vice in the league? It has been said many times that the NBA is the longest running orgy. The drug testing is a joke and only morons get caught. I would bet that more kids are born out of wedlock than those in a traditional marriage. A good percentage of players are broke shortly after retiring due to this fast lifestyle.

In other words, where is the public statement made for their disapproval of Shawn Kemp?

    Weed is also illegal.

I don't do drugs or other things, but people have the right to live their life.

Not to derail the thread, but it's been recent news that the Boy Scouts are considering lifting their ban on gay membership. It seems they're proposing that gay youths be allowed to be scouts but not gay men as scout leaders.

My knee jerk reaction to the whole ban all along is that it's rather silly. But I've heard one actual argument for keeping the ban that I find hard to refute.

You see, with (what they think are) no gay members, they don't have to worry about the boys entrusted to them having sex on their watch. They're answerable to the parents, like it or not.

I thought he was also gay? Maybe I'm mistaken? Could be I got my insanely brutal hate crimes mixed up.

Your point stands. As Bob D. said: This is NOT at the same level of what Jackie Robinson went through.

For me at least, it's not really a big story. Even though I've really enjoyed this thread!

I remember how shocked I was as a teenager when I read that oral sex was (at the time) illegal in 32 states. The poor oppressed Christians in this country need to keep their ridiculous ideology out of my private life.

I was at a coffee shop here in Portland about 15 years ago when an effeminate man came up bleeding from several places on his head and from his mouth. He had just been been beaten up for being gay. 4 people jumped out of their car and punched and kicked him while yelling F---t and other slurs. He was missing teeth, his ear was ripped and all this because he was gay. Now every gay person does not go through an ordeal like that, but they all grow up with the knowledge that there are people in society who want to do that to them.

I know there is not a parallel between what LGBT's and Blacks have gone through, but we must remember that just because Blacks in our society have been through worse, it does not make what gays have gone through any better. Same with Jew in the Holocaust, Native Americans and many other peoples, we don't really need to rank which atrocity is worse.

America is a fucking awesome place because we love merit. Show you have something to add, and you can be a winner in our society. It has not always been that way, but thats a hallmark of Modern America.

And by the way, do you really think that if a gay man came out 100 years ago, he did not risk being put to death?

Sorry for rambling, I kind of hit too many thoughts for one post.

Collins may have came out so that ESPN would stop talking about a backup QB being released in NY.

Wait till Canadian football highlights are the lead every time Tebow's team plays.
