Looks fucking sexy. There was this article that suggested apple purchasing Tesla Motors and incorporate the apple lifestyle to the vehicles.
The parking lot where I work now sports three Tesla cars and all three are raved about (although, one guy owns two of them, so that's a slightly skewed result.) The owner of the two different models says the negative NY Times article is way over blown and that they're solid cars. The price is starting to get into the zone where it makes pretty good sense; although, until the battery recharge is faster they're better for local use. Taking a road trip in one would be a hassle.
Well the 85 kilowatt vehicle has a range of 300 mils at 55 mph. They have a charging option of 1.5 hour per plug in. You could work the recharge during a lunch I guess. Even then 300 miles is still a long way
That might work for some, but when I'm on a road trip, I get in the mode. Stopping off for gas is a bummer, stopping to wait for a charge for an hour and a half would drive me crazy. But maybe I'm delusional because I have two small kids and driving for two hours without stopping is a big deal.
300 miles is more than a two hour drive. It's more like a 4.5 hour drive. Let's say you travel at speeds of 70 mph; that's 4:30 hours before stopping. If you left right after breakfast; you can sit and have lunch. Usually it's 1 hour to eat and rest. That gives you an additional 3 hours. Then you can stop for dinner. Get another 3 hours. In a full day; you can travel 700 miles. That's from Los Angeles to Northern California with only 2 stops. Then when you rest for the night; you would have another 300 miles left on the charge. That's from Northern California to Portland Oregon on 1 stop.
I really dig those cars, but a few things I have heard. when you do the quick recharge, it wears down the battery much quicker. Also, if you ever let the batteries go completely dead, they can't be charged back up. And considering that the batteries cost i think around 20K, wearing them down fast or completely draining them can be real bad news. This is just recalling off the top of my head, I'm sure you can find more accurate figures by searching. But fucking A man, thats a cool ass car.
I've been leasing one for the last 6 months. They're just OK. Probably gonna just go back to my Prius.
