The Timberwolves are finalizing the release of guard Brandon Roy, essentially ending his career.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are formalizing the release of Brandon Roy, ridding themselves of the $5.3 million owed him in the 2013-14 season, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

An announcement is expected in the near future. After seven career knee surgeries for Roy, this is likely the end of a career once destined for greatness.

Roy's two-year contract allows for the franchise to cut him if his chronically injured knees are no longer playable. Roy played five games for the Wolves this season.

Minnesota's new general manager, Flip Saunders, inherited Roy from his predecessor, David Kahn. One of the final downfalls of Kahn's failed run as GM was the two-year, $10.4 million deal with Roy. Minnesota guaranteed Roy his $5.1 million salary in the 2012-13 season, despite little examination of his troubled knees, sources said.

Roy, 28, started the T'wolves' first five games of the 2012-13 season, but never recovered from a mid-November knee procedure. Roy was the 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year with the Portland Trail Blazers and a three-time All-Star.

Knee injuries with Portland eventually led the franchise to use the league's amnesty clause to remove the balance of his near-max contract in 2011.

so... you think Portland has any interest having him in some sort of lower end position, assuming Roy still wants to stay in basketball, and not play? Or does he try to get in with Seattle if things actually happen there.

I dunno if there is a deadline for them to do it, otherwise, I'm surprised they didn't wait longer, to explore the possibility of trading him as an unguaranteed deal.

I think Roy still has more European mystery treatments and another comeback ahead of him. In two years I see him being a late season roster addition for a team looking to get a championship. I don't think he should do it but I would imagine it would be hard to give up basketball as young as he is.

He's 28 and with 7 knee surgeries. You can stick a fork in his career.

I thought he had "retired" for the second time already. If so, this is a nonstory. He will not be signing with us or anyone else.

Do you think the Wolves will retire his jersey?

Any chance Memphis can sign him and fuck over the Blazers again while ruining Roy's knees even further?

Man, I feel bad for him. All the money in the world doesn't mean a damn thing if you can't do what you love.

I hope we have a Brandon Roy appreciation night one day. The guy almost single-handedly saved this franchise.

With Roy back and the trainer Jensen gone, we're set at SG for 10 years.

Should've retired to begin with. I can't say I feel bad for him at all. The best thing we can do is to urge and require him to stay retired, so he can walk when he is 40.

So his pathetic little comeback cost Paul Allen millions of dollars didn't it? Funny how lightening always seems to strike this guy twice!

And no, don't even think about retiring Brandon's number. That would only be a display of what a losing franchise this is, to retire a guy who had 3 good years and never made it out of the 1st round.

Not a bad gamble for the T'Wolves. If Brandon would have been able to contribute 20 mpg, he would have been terrific for them.

Would have to see how the insurance policy was written, but with him only playing 5 games it may not have cost him anything. The Blazers might have made out in this ordeal with the offset from what Minnesota paid him this year.

I do not think either party is at fault here. Thought then and especially now that it was silly of Minnesota to sign him. Just one of the many bad decisions by Kahn.

At that price, I'd say it was a pretty bad gamble.

In two years we may see him in his own Hoveround power chair. Heck, he may even do a commercial!
