Zojirushi's are money. We have one of their nicer rice cookers too (this coffee debate is taking a turn for the Asian)

We had a cheap (~$100) burr grinder that broke about 6 months ago. We replaced it with this Kitchenaid one. It grinds ALOT better than our old one and has a glass container so there is a lot less static electricity going on in there. Unless you're spending $400+ on the grinder, I think it's one of the better ones on the market.

Most of those seem to be about the build quality. It is plastic, so I could see that being an issue. So far we haven't had any issues, other than before I started weighing I put in to much coffee and the bloom caused it to overflow a bit. Hopefully it holds up, cause it does brew a nice cup.

Yeah, i have the standard krups $20 grinder. I have a hand grinder too but honestly I'm too lazy to use it that often. Its not a huge priority for me right now on the grinder.

Absolutely. Weight is the only way to calculate dosage. Then again, I'm a coffee geek.

This is wonderful info, I have about a dozen pages open to coffee related sites right now.

Most of what I used up till now is pretty standard, but I have likely the only coffee grinder of it's kind. Actually, it looks like a coffee grinder from the outside but with in blued steel, and it was actually made for laboratories about 30 years ago. A boss of mine used to use it for grinding rat embryos back in the day, but it was of no use anymore so I took it. It looks like a coffee grinder, but when you remove the much better locking lid, the blade on the inside is not a thing piece of metal, but a thick bar that smashes more of the bean at once. I have no idea if it's a good grinder by coffee-snob standards, but I love giving people a cup of coffee, then waiting for them to ask about the odd looking grinder. They hear rat embryos and freak out. It's been well washed.

In the Philippines there are beans that a cat eats and shits out. Last time there they ran out. It's supposed to be awesome. Civet coffee.

My parents pick up some weasel poop beans in either Thailand or Vietnam last fall. I keep forgetting I have them though.

Re: Do you drink your coffee black or do you perfer sugar and cream and if so how muc

A good grinder grinds evenly. That is why the burr ones are better than blades. The REALLY nice ones do so even for superfine (espresso) grinds. I noticed the difference between my two burr grinders ($100 vs $200), but I doubt I could tell much difference between mine and any of the super nice ones.

As for your grinder, it probably doesn't produce the most even grind, but being able to have that back story more than makes up for any quality issues.

Re: Do you drink your coffee black or do you perfer sugar and cream and if so how muc

I only make one cup in the morning. I like fairly spendy coffee, so I don't want to waste it. I use a Melitta #2 cone to brew it.

    http://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Filte...8&qid=1370030848&sr=8-3&keywords=melitta cone

I heat the water in an electric kettle.

    http://www.amazon.com/Proctor-Silex-K2070Y-Electric-Kettle/dp/B00023XCWS/ref=sr_1_3?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1370030932&sr=1-3&keywords=sunbeam+water+boiler

I grind my coffee when I buy it, because when I've tested, I can't tell enough difference for me to take the extra time to grind every morning. I just eyeball how much I want in the cone, depending on hard strong I want it that morning.

Makes as good a cup of coffee as anywhere I've bought brewed on the way to work, and I go buy Starbucks, Allann Brothers and Dutch Bros on the way. (No Stumptown in Tracktown, as far as I know.)

Of course, there are those that would say I'm just a lazy tight-ass, but I can live with that.

What you want in a grinder is something that will make grinds of exactly the same size, without overheating the bean. The blade grinder will create an unequal grind, diminishing the quality of the brew. That's why true burr grinders (not the cheap Krups/Cuisinart models that just have two flat metal wheels) are the best method.

The bottom line is that there is no one method for brewing perfect coffee. For darker roasts and earthier beans (Indonesia), a French press is best. For a light Horn of Africa bean, the vacuum pot is superior. For a bean in the middle (Central American), a Chemex is perfection. You can also do really well with a Moccamaster, or anything with a really strong pump.

Ya, I've thought about retiring my embryo grinder from it's coffee work and just use it for spice grinding like nutmeg over the holidays.

After reading this thread, I think I may hold up on an espresso machine and just get a better coffee maker. The Bonavita BV1800 8-Cup Coffee Maker might be perfect, good reviews and a decent price.

Ive had this a few times recently, its a pretty nice way to brew. A little gimmicky and showy but you can appreciate the craft.

the setup is only about $90 I believe. but it takes a while and is labor intensive.

How much do they charge for a cup? Any more than a pour over? And I think adding GR to this conversation really made it go Asian!

Here is the ultimate showy method. Its not that it takes 8 hours (most cold brewed iced coffee take a long time), its that its an elaborate tower and it comes out 1 drop per second.

$3.50 for a small 8 oz. it comes quite hotter than most cups and is clean tasting and bold without being bitter..no oil layer! They actually let you smell the coffee after they grind it and before brewing
