I'll say. Soccer players aren't allowed to use their hands.

I had read about this, but this is the first time I've seen the video.

What I read made it sound like he sadistically abused the shit out of the dog, but to me, it looks like he was just trying to throw it over the fence, and then when he missed, the dog ran off unharmed...

What's the big deal? Is this another thing I've got to live in Portland to understand or be sympathetic of?

I would say that Portland treats dogs the same or better than people. Even the homeless have them.

    That's my point...

I love dogs... my dog died a little more than a year ago, and I'm not gonna lie, I broke down behind closed doors... she was part of the family, grew up with her, and treated her like a family member...

With that said though, the mentality around these parts (the southeast) is completely different when it comes to dogs. I'm not condoning it, but I will defend it. Animal abuse is one thing, but based on what I grew up seeing as animal abuse around these parts, that soccer player's handling of that dog is far from abuse. If I had a nickel for every dog I saw thrown, kicked, smacked, or otherwise told its parameters by physical means that I was still completely comfortable with, I'd be a wealthy man. At the end of the day, it's an animal, not a human being...

Based on the description of the video, you'd think he was torturing the dog, but the guy just grabbed it and tried to throw it over the fence...

Agreed, but from the lack of comments on this one I think most agree as well.

For me, it's not that he tossed the dog and that failed to clear the fence; it's the fact that picked the dog up, carried it, and threw it by its neck. The amount of force exerted on the animal's neck through that process is ridiculous. In my mind, that kind of action--on any animal--requires a reckless wanton disregard for the value of life. It would have bothered me just as much if it were a cat, a rabbit, an iguana, etc.

But crushing a spider to death or keeping a cow penned up for life to be slaughtered is ok?

Yeah cause those are the exact same thing. I'd bet that most people who are ok with cattle being penned up wouldn't be ok with someone picking one up (with a crane or something) and tossing it around.

I'm with voodoo on this, I love dogs, but humanity has bigger problems than hurting a dogs feelings

That said, cruel people are cruel, and fuck them

So we can only discuss or be bothered by genocide? Just cause it's not the worst thing in the world doesn't mean its OK, and because of the connection many of us have with dogs, this does strike a chord in a similar way to watching someone abuse a child (although not to that sever degree).

There are certain things that elicit a visceral response, and dog abuse is one for me. Intellectually I may say it is no big deal, after all what intrinsic value does a dog have over broccoli which we not only abuse but eat. But I could also say the same thing about a person. Really, does it matter if some store clerk gets shot in the head? In the big scheme of things it doesn't, we are all destined for dirt anyway. But I don't say that because I have a connection to other people, likewise I have a connection to dogs.

The dog in this comparison gets to live as does the cow being picked up by a crane. The spider and cow going to slaughter do not. While I am not a fan of animal abuse, I do know where my food comes from and it is not pretty.

As a society we choose to make a distinction. Unless of course they have something we want, then we can label them as inhuman and then kill them with the grace of god.

Not a hunter, but is it not accepted that you have to eat what you kill? Maybe the same should apply to war. I know I would be less willing to invade.

Killing an animal is a necessity for food (unless you want to go vegetarian). It is an accepted cost associated with our nutrition/hunger/etc. Tossing a cow or dog for the hell of it, or because you have an anger issue, is abuse. There is no benefit other than your (the guy in the video) own perverted satisfaction.

The spider, well the spider is a spider.
