Re: Do you enjoy watching Galf on TV? I mean the major events. Dmn, man....are you paid by the number of threads you start?
No, it's awful. People say this all the time but I really don't understand why someone would watch golf. I can't even think of a reason to play it. It's not real exercise or excitement.
Just because people can't relate to a sport doesn't mean it's boring . . . it mean you just aren't into it. I used to feel the same about baseball and soccer. But the reality is these are multi billion dollar sports, so clearly there are fans out there that will relate with it and watch it . . . and there is a reason for it. I've played a lot of sports in my life and have not found a more mentally challenging sport than golf. If you are a competitor who likes to challenge yourself on a personal level, you should try golf. It is easy to get obsessed with it (on top of it being the best networking sport you can get into). Once you are into it and are really trying to get good at it, you can appreciate just how good these pro are. I hear people who don't follow basketball say the same thing about basketball this time of year. I want to watch the finals wherever I am and sometimes I'm somewhere with non basketball fans who dis the sport and call it boring and wonder how I can be so into it. That is what this thread sounds like to me.
Probably the worst thing ever would be to sit and have to watch golf for 18 hours a da................ shit wait a sec!
How is golf the most mentally challenging sport? You have forever to think about whatever it is you're going to think about. You don't have the ball and have to decide what to do with it more than once every second. Golf is easy, physically and mentally.
It's pretty easy. Real athletes don't play golf, obviously, because it's so boring, and doesn't even give you a good workout.
The fact you have that much time is what makes it tough. Usually one can use adrenaline to help them in sports when they need to pick up their game. Not so in golf. It's not a reactive sport, it's a thinking sport. Kind of like how they say free throws are a mental thing. You can make countless in a row when there is no pressure, but put some pressure on and players start missing (they have to much time to think about it). It's a mental thing. That is the best way I can describe it. You really should give it a try. If you are athletic and have good hand eye coordination, you will probably be decent right off the bat and enjoy it (get to hit the shit out of the ball). It is taking it to the next level that is tough and so much of it is the mental aspect. You go to the range and can hit the ball long and straight. Then you go on the course with other and keep score and all of sudden that shot becomes so much more difficult. Hard to explain, but again if you are an athlete my guess is you play three rounds and your hooked. (Most people I play with were all good athletes in other sports and are competitive as can be)
If it is so easy, try it. At the very least, if you are good, you will could end up playing with some real power people in the business world. If you are really good you can make millions . . . what have you got to lose. I think you will find it is not easy . . . not only do I find it the most mentally challenging, it is the most humbling sport I have ever played. And I started the same way as you . . . an easy sport that I will eat up and make my boss embarrassed. Again, I was very humbled by the sport. Also, do you notice a lot of ex-pro athletes get bit by the golf bug. Football, basketball and baseball players play golf during the off season and become committed to the sport when they retire. And none that I know of can make the senior tour. Clyde, Barkley, Lomax, Jordan (countless others) have all tried and can't even get on the tour . . . can't be that easy.
I've played golf more than enough for my liking. I played every summer when I was a kid, had lessons here and there, and got pretty good. The last time I played was about a year ago and I did great for how little I've played recently, but I did not enjoy it, I never have before, and I highly doubt I ever will. I do get what you're saying about the difficulty though with different courses and shots. For the most part, other sports fields and courts stay the same. It's just there is an incredibly large amount of things I'd rather do than golf.
I totally relate with that. I asked my brother the other day why he never took it up and he said exactly that (he is a surfer). Funny with your situation because I wish I took the game up as a kid. I've got an functional but ugly swing and can tell players who grew up with it (they have a natural swing). I played a lot of tennis as a kid and have a a good natural swing. I laugh (in a good humor way) at some tennis player because they buy all the latest technology rackets but a good swing with an old racket is more effective. While gofers who played as kids probably laugh at my golf game as I try to buy a good golf game with all the latest clubs. Yet I would rather go play golf than tennis . . . go figure. Maybe if I grew up playing golf I would enjoy tennis more as an adult???
