Most likely framework, amid signs of progress in talks, remains DeAndre Jordan for KG & two first-rounders for Doc Rivers' coaching rights

Boston gives up two first rounders for Jordan? Knowing that CP3 wants it done it seems like Boston could offer less. Seems like too much.

That would make a lot more sense. I guess you would have to break it up that way because you can't trade salary for a coach.

If trade finally goes through, Clips responsible for extra $1.1 mil to DeAndre Jordan this season and next two thanks to 15% trade kicker

    Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 1m
In old CBA receiving team had to pay trade kicker. No more. Jordan's deal signed under new labor agreement so Clips would owe extra $3.3 mil

No problem. I love this time of year and get a little carried away and its also slow at work so that makes for good a combination. People knock twitter but when used just for Blazers/NBA it can be great

Sources tell ESPN it's been communicated to Celts & Clips that league has questions about proposed deals and appearance they are connected

    Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 4m
NBA rules prohibit any trade/signing being made w/contingencies or side deals. Can Celts & Clips prove Doc & KG deals are "separate" moves?

How can Clippers & C's credibly argue these are separate deals at this pt? I assume temporal separation is an option

I do not understand why they need to be separate deals. Coaches technically can't be traded, and trades can't have any
external contingencies. So Garnett trade not legal with KG a part of it, nor with it contingent on separate Rivers deal. One option may be to do KG/DAJ trade, let time pass, then do Doc/picks deal.

If the league had concerns about this why didn't they bring them up a week ago? 1) Who's to say they didn't? 2) League gets involved when one of the teams brings a potential deal to them.

but if coaches can't be traded how can BOS trade Doc for picks? They're not trading him. They're releasing him from his contract and waiving his non-compete clause, after which Clips make their own deal with him. There is precedent for the league allowing one team to compensate another with picks for doing that. @rubensborges

how could they veto the lakers trade and let this one go? That would be ridiculous. The "league" didn't veto the Lakers trade. Stern as owner & fiduciary of the Hornets at the time, vetoed the trade in that capacity. It's the same concept as Jerry Buss having had the final say on the Lakers' side, and deciding not to give final approval on a deal. But Stern's dual role at the time muddied the waters. Considerably. I wrote about it on http://ESPN.com when it happened. @koppa34

does the trade kicker come out of your salary cap? Or is it additional money. Trade kickers are paid by the receiving team, and are charged to the receiving team's cap. I cover this here: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q97 … @danielconst

About time this is being discussed. Coaches can't be traded. And now that the whole world knows about it, it's obvious that this deal has to be based on external contingencies.

There is precedent for teams getting compensation to release a coach, however. The releasing of Doc for picks isn't the issue. It's saying first do this, then do this next one.

Really? This is news to me.

No way Doc is worth paying $7mil + picks, but I like the idea of KG and CP on the same team.

Thanks! I wasn't expecting you to - I figured it was just my luddite, anit-Twitter disposition that kept me from being able to follow, but that others knew how.
This is certainly an interesting story to watch unfold!

But that was a pretty smart contract Bos wrote up for Doc saying he couldn't coach for another team for a year
