I repeat. Management needs to solve this problem.

I expect nothing from Withey (2 years older) except to make Leonard feel competitive about being the starter.

I don't think Meyers has a problem 'playing like a man'. I don't see him shying away from contact. He just has to learn how to play. That's it. There's no substitute for experience, and he's relatively inexperienced at the post position, especially at this level. He's talented, eager, and hard working. Have some faith. And some patience.

I expect to see considerable improvement through out the season as evidence we have a coach working to make a center of him. He obviously has talents but it needs to be shaped and channeled. Coaching.

I expect him to backup Withey, who hopefully is not the starter.

At this point it is a failed pick, just like Luke Babbitt after one year. Can he make huge improvements? Sure, but that would be very uncommon and quite unlikely in this scenario. Young players like Zach Randolph and Jermaine Oneal showed glimses as rookies, Meyers hasn't. He is 21, players have slight tweaks and improvements in their games as they age but not complete transformations. He is more similar to Olowakandi or Robert Swith than a DPOY like Tyson Chandler.

Withey wiil back up Leonard, of course.

Babbitt was drafted #17, ahead of where he was forecast, because McMillan wanted shooters and Babbitt was supposedly the best in the draft. After one year our gamble had failed because his shooting was not as advertised.

Leonard's "failings" were the ordinary failings of any raw rookie whose eyes are burning every second from bad contact lenses. Easily correctable. There is no comparison between the two players.

The way our roster is constructed right now we need help defense out of the center position, exactly what Withey provides. He was a polished senior. If we needed 15ppg from our center spot Meyers would be the obvious bet, but we don’t. After a month I expect to see Withey getting more time than Meyers.

Babbitt’s problem was not shooting, he had zero to his game outside of shooting, but the guy could flat out shoot.

I heard one of the Blazer assistant coaches say last year (paraphrasing} 'Myers should be an All-Star in five years. Hibbert took that amount of time to develop. Myers is actually special."

I leave that to the experts, because to this layman, he looked pretty awful.

I don't know how to check, but...how many centers drafted anywhere near #45 were starting 1 month into their rookie years? I don't know of any. Leonard has a year's head start, though he's 2 years younger than Withey.

It seems to me that you can play the game and not understand it better when you are this young. And he is going to play more this season. I think most people feel the size and athletic ability are there and if he is going to play more then that really just leave drive and desire to get better. Ive never got the impression that he doesnt want to get better so I expect to at the very least make the kind of jump that most players do after a season under their belt. I still have good hopes for him.

Meyers has clearly been working on his guns. I hope someone has him working on his lower body and how to leverage it.

Wasn't he going to attend a big man's camp this summer?
