With an eclectic mix of folks who were around back when 10cc was putting out good music, I figured I'd ask if anyone has an opinion of them. I've always been aware of them, but I only recently made an honest attempt to listen to their catalogue. I listened to their first four albums straight through, when they had their original line-up, and it was really interesting stuff. After that fourth album, I just skimmed over the rest of their catalogue, because it really all sounded like shit to me. They're weird and avant-garde, but for as much stupid shit that they wrote, there was actually some good music. I was aware of the popular, stupid, fun tracks like "Rubber Bullets," "The Dean and I," and "Life is a Minestrone," and those are great, off-the-wall tracks that I can appreciate, but I didn't know that they also had some great straight-forward rock tracks like, "I'm Mandy, Fly Me." They seem like a predecessor to bands that I never really fully got into, like the Talking Heads or the B-52's, but with actually decent rock tracks hidden in their early catalogue. Thoughts?
First time I heard any of the members of 10cc was guitarist Eric Stewart when he was with the Mindbenders. In the pop realm they were at the lead of the pack in pushing the envelope, but in such a deft way that their musically untrained audience rarely realized it.
