When I read the quote you provided, I see this:

I think Paxson expected him to fail, and that the Bulls would put him out to pasture.

scoop Jackson (admittedly, not facts, just opinions)

No luck finding a link to that interview with Pax about heart, though.

I alway had the impression that Paxson never thought much of Curry, but begrudgingly accepted his usefulness beause of his size and scoring ability.

So when push came to shove, he didn't want to let him go to the curb for nothing.....but always felt more comfortable trading him than keeping him around.

So, if he passed the genetic test, they were going to keep him. If he didn't, they were going to give him an annuity. That's a direct quote from Paxson. (the thonos article says the same thing btw)

The reason the Knicks trade happened is because Curry forced Paxson's hand by not taking the test. Paxson was clearly torn about the entire situation.

As for Paxson expecting Curry to fail the test, I don't buy it. That means that Paxson wasn't dealing in good faith and was asking Curry to destroy his career and future earning potential. It would also publicly devalue Curry so that a trade like the Knicks trade would likely not happen. I don't think much of Paxson, but I don't think he'd stoop to such underhanded / bad tactics.

I understand what you're getting at but I don't buy it. Curry averaged 16.1 on 54% shooting as fourth year preps-to-pros player. There's usually only like four or five guys every season who can score from the post and Curry was one of them. Yes, he never made you ooh and ahh. Yes, his defense and rebounding were suspect. But the centers who can score from the post, they're the one's who make the big bucks because so few people can replicate the skillset. Paxson would have paid top dollar for Curry, just like every other GM.

The thinking us he tried to talk down Curry's value by hanging the heart problem on him.

"Go get your best offer and we'll match. We'll make sure they know signing you is a huge risk, tho."

Well, I don't want to push my point too hard. Paxson had his doubts about Eddy's commitment to being a basketball player, and for good reason. But Eddy was playing his best ball before the heart problem. Ah well.

If you're going to accuse Pax of misplaced sentimentality, the Curry case is the problem in a nutshell.

The addition of Gar was a good fix, I think.

See, now this kind of cynicism is what K4E questioned. But who can know their motives? Of course, Cuban and Morey only care about pleasing their fans.

If he cared about Curry as a person, he'd have just cut him. Why be a party to his dying on the court as a knick? Why encourage him to play at all?

I think we're talking over each other :-). My point is that everybody has doubts - and secretly hates -- developing, brash young big men. But you pay them mad cash anyway because they're impossible to find and essential to success, unless your wings are LJ, Bosh and Wade.

Yep. He would have paid him. Just not like Baby Shaq. And with good reason. I don't know. Tough situation. But of those who handled it badly, I think Eddy handled it worst of all.

    I don't think so.

When his ploy failed, he saw the Knicks would pay Curry anyway. More than Pax was willing to.

I don't have any quotes with me, but I'm pretty sure Pax said point-blank that he thought someone's "approach to the game" was a very important part of their success in the league.

This doesn't necessarily equate with being a boy scout, but it did mean you were competitive and played to win. Eddy kinda played like it was the easiest way to get a big paycheck. There's nothing wrong with that per se, especially when you're 7' with nimble feet, but I always thought Pax didn't really trust Eddy to be in it for the long haul.

I agree with everything you've said here. Where we disagree is with this comment you made earlier:

I read your statements as suggesting that Paxson never was committed to retaining Curry. My point is that Paxson could have harbored serious reservations about Eddy's long term success and still have been absolutely, 100%, no-waffling willing to give him a giant extension.

But he wasn't 100% committed to keeping Eddy on the court. That's the difference. He felt 100% (maybe 110%) responsible for Eddy's future, but he wasn't 100% at all when it came to being committed to Eddy as a basketball player. He wrote in an explicit "sit-down" clause in the contract he offered.

Again, I'm willing to let go, but hey, it's still break.

What's more likely is they realized twin towers wasn't exactly working. Skiles started Curry and finished with Chandler, but the two rarely played together.

I'll buy that about the twin towers. They needed a vet on the floor who knew what they were doing with them. But that was because neither of them, especially Eddy, really thought the game of basketball, to paraphrase MJ.

It was shocking how terrible a rebounder Curry was. He was extremely good for his age on the offensive end. If he grabbed 10 boards a game, he'd have been a superstar.

I think Curry also being home near all his family and friends he grew up with had bad influences. Getting away should have done him well, but he imploded.

Boy, Skiles was such a snarky coach, but that comment about Eddy and rebounding was gold: "Jump!"
