Good news for Andy Lee’s right leg: The 49ers have signed undrafted rookie punter Colton Schmidt.

The former UC Davis standout will give Lee, a three-time All-Pro, some relief during training camp after he broke his own school record by averaging 44.5 yards per punt last year. Schmidt could also give placekicker Phil Dawson, 38, a breather this summer: He handled kickoff duties in college and had 34 touchbacks in 2012. Schmidt’s signing was first reported by the Baltimore Sun.

In another roster move, the 49ers cut long snapper Kyle Nelson, who appeared in six games with the Chargers last year. Nelson, who was signed on May 22, spent the 2012 offseason with San Francisco. With Nelson’s release, undrafted rookie long snapper Kevin McDermott will serve as the lone competition for 14-year veteran Brian Jennings, 36, who shares the franchise record for most consecutive games played (208).
