...just spitballing here, but how about Michael Young for the rest of this year? ...I know he's 36 but he's still playing every day and playing well...His salary is $18 for this year with Texas paying $10 of that, which leaves $8 that would be pro-rated and only cost around $3 Mil for the remainder of this season. ...and his contract is up after this year.
I was advocating for that weeks ago. The Phillies have now lost 4 in a row so maybe they will finally be sellers. If not McCann I would love a deal with Ruiz and Young.
Its pretty obvious yankees are looking to buy, but buy cheap. If they cant get most of the contract eaten, and giving minimal prospects, it won't be discussed. I'm fine with that part, actually. I just wish they wouldnt even bother pretending they want to be buyers. 189 is still goal #1 here.
Phillies seem to be straggling the line about being buyers or sellers. Per MLB a few minutes ago they are talking to Utley about a contract extension. Michael Young, good addition, thirty something or not the man has always hustled. If the Yankees got him and Jeter comes back with any consistency it would improve the team on both sides of the game.
...how do we know they are pretending?...none of us knows what's really going on behind the scenes. We get the occasional news snippets, but that's it.
Blue I have to believe by now that both Hal & Hank know that 189M is just not going to happen. I mean geez....I hope so.
...Hal admitted as much a few months ago. ...but if they can somehow shed themselves of ARods contract, it would be more realistic.
Unfortunately, I disagree guys. Hal's priority is to get under that 189 mill to reset the luxury tax for future years and nothing thats happened this year or lately has gone away from that plan. Next year we will have a team of hafner and overbay types
...that's not really his priority...like I said, he's admitted that the 189 figure may not be realistic and attainable.
The way he's producing this year we'd be right in the thick of of things if we had a few more Overbay types.
With this Arod situation, the Yankees may have made their minds up and realize that they are looking for a longer term solution instead of a Young who is average at best at third.
yeah but who is this younger 3rd baseman. They tried Adams and he did nothing while playing everyday.
They already tried to get Headley and Padres said they are not trading him so that is one option gone.
I'd stay on the Padres for Headley. Yankees supposedly have some decent minor league talent at lower levels. Why not offer up a few pieces and perhaps throw Hughes into the mix. If not Headley, then go for Young. He could be like Ichiro in terms of being an older player, who could be rejuvenated coming to NY. From my understanding, over the years, he and Jeter have been close friends, and with Jeter hopefully coming back soon - that would be a decent left side of the IF for the last 50+ games. The offense is not gonna catch-up to this team's pitching, but it needs to get better to make this quality of pitching not go for naught.
that is the thinking that got us into this mess... trading prospects for big league level players... we need to stop trading away what little talent we have left...
...that's why vette stipulated "lower level talent". ...until they can figure out something different and maybe more long term, Headley or Young would be very good options. There's no one on the farm who's ready to play.
