Let's see, do I have this right? The Russians don't want Gay marriage, so they are evil. Gay's will now push for boycotting the Olympics because they back their Orthodox church?
Is this a correct reading? Do you really expect them to go against their church?

News of anti gay protests in the streets there has been ongoing for months.

It isn't just the repressive govt., it seems to be a populist thing.

Well can you say what you expect the Russians to do. Go against their church? Or reject their church and side with a Gay minority?

Why do you say it is anti anything. It seems to me they just are backing the position of their church. Quite simple actually.

I don't see how boycotting the olympics will do anything.... it's not like Russia wins anything anymore anyway. This isn't the 80's. Russia isn't even relevant anymore in the sports world.

You don't understand. Apparently the Gay gang believe they can shame the Russians into going against the teachings of the Russian Orthodox Church by boycotting the Olympic games.
Don't you see how logical this view is?

You think that it's good to arrest people for being supportive of gay people? You think children should be ripped from their homes if there is a possibility that one of the parents is gay?

No, that is wrong. They want to arrest people for being gay or even being associated with people that are gay. They want to rip children from their homes if one of the parents is gay.

It's one thing for a church to be against homosexuality. It's another to arrest people for being gay.

That's not the point Eric. I don't think boycotting the Olympics and punishing the hard work of all our athletes (some of whom are gay) will accomplish anything. Why would boycotting a sporting event change Russian politics?

You're old enough to remember the past-- that it takes 30-40 years of government propaganda to change the population. The Phil Donahue show was used for a decade for the initial attitude loosening-up. Until then, the U.S. was the same as the rest of the world still is. Only the U.S. and Europe have changed their internal policies.

Some of the Olympic athletes ARE gay, natebishop. By law, they could arrest the gay athletes. They could arrest the coaches for helping them. This is not cool. We can't support Russia in this.

And they can't marry each other either. Crazy Russia! Knew we should have bombed them!

We can threaten to pull out if the laws aren't changed. We can't pour money into their community if they are going to have laws like this. Yes, the athletes have worked hard but this is bigger than them. Besides, they could be arrested when they get there anyway.
