Reza Aslan, a religious scholar with a Ph.D. in the sociology of religions from the University of California and author of the new book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, went on FoxNews.com’s online show Spirited Debate to promote his book only to be prodded about why a Muslim would write a historical book about Jesus.

The book is now #1 on Amazon thanks to Fox News.

In the past week I have seen Reza Aslan on Real Time with Bill Maher andThe Daily Show with John Oliver, the book was already 4th on the New York times list, not sure where it was on Amazon before the Fox New interview. While, Reza has to be happy to both make Fox News look bad and promote his book, I'm sure he would have rather talked about his book during that interview instead of been harassed by Lauren Green.

What an embarrasing interview. It's nice that she finally got to a legitimate question five minutes in; unfortunately it was the only one she asked.

From 10 minutes of her questions, I learned nothing about the book. The questions were all forms of the same question.

As he pointed out, she clearly never read the book or even a decent synopsis. And she has no problems with people like Pamela Geller, who are not scholars, writing what are essentially hit pieces on Islam.

I've seen great take-offs, like, Mr. Kafka, you're a human, how can you write about cockroaches? Mr. Dickens, you are English, how can you write about the French Revolution? Mr. Shakespeare, how can you write A Midsummer Night's Dream if you aren't a fairy?

To be fair, some might argue that Shakespeare may have actually been a bit of a fairy. :devilwink:

i can't download videos very well, so I'm talking a bit out of my hat...but why, exactly, cannot a Muslim write about Jesus? He's a pretty major deal in the Qu'ran.

Platypus, of course I thought of that.

I wonder when Fox News will start opposing all the male legislators making laws about women's reproductive health?

It seems to me those male legislators (as well as many female legislators) are trying to represent those women who haven't yet developed to be able to reproduce.

As for this interview, it's just ignorance. Shame on the EP for being so stupid. If it were CNN or MSNBC, this wouldn't be a blip in the news. However, FOX is evil, so it's about the messenger.

Why would a Republican news network ever talk about Democrats?
Why would an American news network report about other countries?
Why would a human news network name itself after a sneaky animal?

Not sure what maxiep is talking about, but anyone who has followed politics would wish that male legislators were as knowledgeable about women as Aslan is about Christianity. Our laws would be much better.

Did you not see the interview? That seems to be the label Fox News wanted to focus on.

This insipid interview is just a byproduct of the television industry focusing on hiring communications degree recipients instead of requiring journalism backgrounds. Fox news, CNN, MSNBC, they're all populated by the same number of hacks, they just ask different stupid questions.

I think I will read the book. Sort of puzzling though the comments about this interview. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Those guys aren't even in the game. I would purpose women have to get a license to turn on the
    reproduction. No abortions needed

Hey do you think that Maddow chick would do a better interview with this Asland guy?
She seems have a soft spot for the Muslims, perhaps she can't give him what you need.

It's a sucky interview, but I would not want to paint Reza Aslan as any sort of intellectual hero. It's cool that he's a proponent of religious moderation, but otherwise he's a first class bullshit artist who frequently overstates his credentials looking to make a buck off controversy, and always has been. Been watching him on the debate circuit for many years.
