The all time biggest screw job has to be the 1942 AL MVP voting where Ted Williams got royally reamed. 1) Joe Gordon (NY) = 173 hits, 18HRs, 103 RBI & a 322 Aver. 2) T. Williams (BOST) 186 hits, 36HRs, 137 RBI & a 356 Aver. (Triple crown) In 1947 Williams lost again. This time to Joe D. 20/97/315 to Williams 32/114/343 Now it was no secret that there was no love lost between Williams & the writers that voted on awards. And in 1951 Writers showed Williams (who had a history of being a bit surly) just what they thought of him. 1) Yogi Berra = 27/88/294 2) T Williams = 30/126/318 But here was the real message to Mr. Williams he didn't finish 2nd to Berra, He finished..............13th in the voting. He did win it though in 47 & 49 _______________________________________________________________ There was also Stan Musial who won MVPs in 43,46 & 48 but IMO he should have also won it in 50, & 51 when he led the league in hitting both years. _______________________________________________________________ And Finally our own Joe DiMaggio who won it in 39, 41 & 47 but IMO he should have also won it in 1937 where he was beat out by Charlie Gerringer 14/96/371 to his numbers 46/167/346. And lost out again in 1948 to Lou Boudreau 18/106/355 to his own numbers, 39/155/320 ______________________________________________________________ Just a little history that I found interesting.
And for what its worth since I'm not a believer that pitchers should be entitled to 2 awards. I think Mattingly should have won the MVP in 1986. One could also make a case for him in 1984 for the same reason.
