...though the Yanx will certainly need help on the mound next year, I disagree about Colon. I think teams need to take a stand on these users. I mean what kind of message does it send out when players like Melky and Colon are busted but then welcomed back with a new contract? ...it could be construed as collusion I suppose if teams avoided them like the plague, but there must be a way to deal with this problem, and simply do the right thing.
He's never skated it and served his suspention. He's paid his dues. He is a MLB player, so IMO there is no reason not to sign him. He got caught. How many didnt. Most of the guys on that list didnt even fail a test. I see no reason to single out Colon or anyone else who hasnt been a total loser about this liek braun and A-rod have. Andy used to. The yankees have resigned him several times since.
...what difference does it make if he skated it or not?...he was on the Biogenisis list, Andy was not...and what were the rules/penalties when Andy did it?...and what was allowed to happen years ago is the very problem. ...sorry, but I cannot simply look the other way having a known cheat on the Yanx...the polices and practices of the past is exactly what got us into this PEDS mess...no more.
They have rules in place. YOu fail a test or get caught you serve a 50 game suspension and you are back. Colon did that. I have no issues signing him to a 1 year deal. None at all. I see your point and i understand it. But this is not a buisness about being honorable. Its about winning and Colon can help them do that.
...right, to hell with what is right, just win baby. ...great philosophy. ...simple question, do you think Colon's use of PEDS helped him and/or gave him an edge or unfair advantage?
Thats the point, there is nothing "wrong" about signing Colon. He is an instated MLB player. Served his punishment agreed upon by all parties. If MLB is going to allow him to play, i see no reason, none at all, why the yankees should not sign him. Someone will. Whats the difference. He isnt getting blackballed. But again, i totally understand your point. It sickens me to no end to have to watch A-rod play right now, on any team let alone mine. But playing he is. Its how it is.
...no reason?...how about the fact that aside from being a cheat, he'll also be 41 years old to start next season...as much as you harp on signing old retreads, why opt for Colon? ...and instead of pitching in Oakland's Coliseum where his numbers are skewed, he'd be pitching in YS, where he sucks. ...and just because that's "how it is" and how it has been, doesn't mean that's the way it has to be.
Id opt for Colon because there isnt much else to opt for. If they miss on Garza, there are not many places to go. And you are right, its not how it has to be. But it is how it is, and it isnt going to change.
^^^you obviously have not been paying attention. According to what many players are saying, things ARE in fact changing...and the general feelings and attitudes about PEDs and how to discipline players is changing. ...and again, how can you lobby for Colon when as I pointed out his age and the fact that's he's terrible in YS?...how can you justify that?...signing Colon just because you think there's not much else to opt for is no reason at all. ...Colon, 1 year deal, yeah, that's clearly planning for the future and really reinforces the team's "direction"...Garza and Colon?...that's it?...you can't find anyone else on that list of FAs?...and what about trades?
I have been paying attention. But again, Colon served his time. Unless he messes up again, he's fair game. And no, i really cant find anyone else on that list that is exciting. Id rather have Colon for 1 year than sign some other yahoo to a multi year deal. The yankees have multiple holes to fill in that rotation. Exactly who are you trading to get this wonderful pitcher? I put my plan out there, whats yours?
At age 40 I pass on Colon, and he just got rocked so he may be breaking down just like he did as a Yankee. They have three spots to fill the way I see it, Phelps looks to be headed for TJ but at least Pineda came up clean. Still, two good starters are probably needed for 2014, tall order.
Im certainly not married to getting Colon. I simply said i would take him on a 1 year deal. Check out that list. Its horrific. If they dont land Garza, they really arent upgrading the rotation thorugh FA. We all would have hoped we could slot Phelps and Pineda in there somewhere but it may not happen, at least not right away. They stand to lose 2 starters, including their best one, and CC is falling like a rock. They will have to do something, and with this group and the farm as is, i dont see any blockbuster trades for pitchers coming our way either. Its a tough spot, but you dont want to be locked into a crappy multi year deal for some mediocre pitcher either. I worry they might actually bring Hughes back.
The one fact against Colon, he will be 41. To brittle to rely on with a team that currently has no depth.
Of course i agree, but its a 1 year gamble. Again, look at that list. unless you want a 3/4 year deal for Ervin Santana there are not a lot of options here.
...Colon?...that's your "plan"...yeah, and it contradicts what you've harping on forever about how to construct this team. Yeah, you're on the cutting edge. ...and you have yet to address the fact that Colon is pitching in that cavernous Oakland ball park and sucks at YS". But yeah, I agree, we should do something, anything, even if it's wrong. ...if your gonna take a flyer on someone, I'd rather have Carpenter. Arroyo, is also choice...Lincecum?...who knows?...Sheilds?...KC may or may not pick up that big option...Nolasco?. And again, as I've already pointed out, there's always the possibility of trades. ...but no, after Garza, Colon is the best option. (rolls eyes)
Yes Colon is my entire plan. Yes that is exactly what i said. Rolls eyes. Obvioulsy if KC doesnt pick up the option you go after him. All the others you mentioned are no better than Colon, and some will take multi years to land. I would rather not do that, because they simply are not that good. Yea Carpenter is a good choice - From a St. Louis news paper: "Chris Carpenter unsure about 2014" Carpenter has been unable to throw since struggling during a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis, and he does not have any plans to throw again in the near future because of nerve trouble in his right shoulder. “I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Carpenter said Monday. “I’m not real optimistic about it.” Asked if he wanted to pitch next season, Carpenter said: “That’s a great question.” He is also 38 by the way. So much for that. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/base...cle_03851f8f-d7e1-5100-a3d5-082c7b1be94d.html
^^^ ...uhhhh....." I put my plan out there, whats yours?"...you type it, stand behind it...sound familiar? ...and yes, I quite aware what Carpenter status is...I actually research before spouting off.
My plan is all there for all to see. But you want to sign a 38 year old who cant throw and doesn't even know if he will pitch next year. Hell of a plan. And again I'll ask you, trade who? What great pitcher are you getting and for who? If any of those other guys you mentioned would take a 1 year deal with the yankees, sure, that would be great. Its doubtful they will. Id rather they not overpay for marginal talent.
...still having trouble with the reading thing I see...I didn't say Carpenter was "my plan" I said, if you'll go back and look, was that "if you're gonna take a flyer on someone I'd rather have Carpenter"...does that also now sound familiar?...Colon, Carpenter are not long term contracts and I don't really want either of them if that is that is the case because I'd rather have players for longer than that...so stop making shit up. ...and quit bouncing back and forth...first you say Colon is "your plan", then you say it wasn't your "entire plan"...now it's your "plan" again...and it's "there for all to see". You can't even remember what you said...you're once again relegated to trying to cover your tracks after making a statement. Your problem ...and I guess you're going to continue to dodge the point about Colon's numbers improving while pitching in that Oakland ballpark for 2 years and conversely, that his numbers suck in YS? ...as far as trades, sorta hard to tell what the market will look like in 6 months, don't you think?
