Is he feeling the pressure of playing for a contract? Is he worried about Biogenesis? Is he hurt? Why only 2 extra base hits over that stretch? Is it a slump? Is he not getting pitches? Does he even care? Something isn't right in Mudville!
It's going to be hard to convince me that Cano wasn't on the juice for a majority of his career. It's no surprise that we're seeing offensive drop offs now that all the PED heat is on the sport.
Exactly, my nightmare is we sign him an he goes for a line next year of .284-8-45 or very pedestrian.
...only good thing out of Cano's mediocrity this year is that other teams can see it too...his big pay day won't be as big as it could have been...he should have re-upped with the Yanx when he had a chance.
I am really on the fence with Cano. If they do sign him I would go no more than 6 years. None of this 8 year crap. I also am in that crowd that thinks he could have been juicing or now maybe he is just really feeling the contract pressure. Either way he is not getting it done and has been horrible the last month or so.
Because of the weak free agent market and because of what pedroia got I still think he is in line for a massive deal. He won't be getting 200 mill but he is still going to command a very long contract. I would take a hard line at 6 years and not budge. Really would be a shame if he just walks away and the yanks are left with nothing because he could have been traded for a bunch of desperately needed prospects, but they just cannot allow another horrible constricting contract situation to happen again.
IMO they could have gotten 2-3 decent players for him at the trade dead line. Now the'll end up with nothing. Just another case of Cashman with his thump up his ass watching the world go by.
...Pedroia's recent contract pretty much set the bar and may very well hurt Cano's leverage in negotiations...and the fact that he's having an "off year" and the rumored suspicions of why he's having and off year will also have some effect on contract offers.
I don't agree. There wasn't an active trade market at all. What contender was giving up 2-3 decent players for Cano?
Simply not true. If they somehow to get him to take a 6 year deal, Im totally fine. 7 is pushing it. Anything more is just too long. Is that being unrealistic? If they let him walk, which they should if the demands get to high, then wouldn't it have been better to trade him off to try to bolster this depeled farm system? See i dont say this stuff for no reason. I dont spout off empty comments for no reason like you do.
someone would have... as blue pointed out, Peavy and to a lesser extent Garza... Cano very easily could have gotten 2-3 decent players
Fact is, no player of Cano's caliber was probably offered anywhere. I am sure he could have brought back a nice package. Look what Garza and Peavy got back. For impact players, teams would have paid.
Fact is, Cano has not shown to be the player teams want to give up chips for in 2013, especially being a walk year, what would you give up for him? 2-3 top prospect? please. Also nobody knows if the guy was shopped or not, he may very well could have been.
He could have been, its doubtful, but possible. but i do disagree with your stance. I think he very easily could have gotten 2-3 pieces from a contender with pieces to give. He has been hitting in a brutal lineup for most of the year. His talent is still very undeniable. He is not having a great year but to suggest he could not be a difference make for a contender is really a stretch IMO. He is still one of, if not the best at his position. He is a far greater talent than Peavy or Garza in comparison to their peers, and those guys brought back plenty.
We can start with the 3-40 in the playoffs last year, we can continue on to this year and see the lapses in approach and effort, we can also infer that he may not be totally clean, given the state of affairs with people like Arod, Melky, Ortiz (players he's close to, who all have PEDs in their portfolio). I've gone back and forth on this , and I have come to the conclusion that once a new GM is in place (yes - I think Cashman's efforts to get fired will finally pay off after this season) - whether to sign Cano or not will be the decision as to the direction this team will take. Sign him? Expect more FA signings, patches, etc. Let him go? A new GM will rebuild, and there will be a few lean years. My guess? Cano signs, the Yankees continue down the road of signing FAs, and just like in 2009 - this team may stumble in to another WS 5 years from now.
