Fried eggs, bacon and potatoes may not seem like the healthiest fare, but eating a large breakfast instead of a large dinner could be an effective strategy to aid weight-loss efforts, a new study suggests.

Fried eggs, bacon and potatoes may not seem like the healthiest fare, but eating a large breakfast instead of a large dinner could be an effective strategy to aid weight-loss efforts, a new study suggests.

The first study, published this month in Nature Communications, found a connection between obesity and lack of sleep. At the University of California, Berkeley, 23 young adults in perfect health had their brains scanned (using a process called functional magnetic resonance imaging) both after a full night’s rest and after a sleepless night. The result was that the types of foods we choose are related to two parts of the brain: the frontal lobe which is responsible for decisions and the deeper centres that deal with rewards. Researchers found that both these areas of the brain are affected by a lack of sleep, with frontal lobe activity impaired by a lack of sleep and deeper centres such as the reward centres in the amygdala showing amplified activity.

The study results? After getting only a little rest, the young adults chose junk food over healthier options. Study authors say the findings show that their are biological foundations for why it may be difficult for some people to lost excessive weight, and for why changes to diet can often be difficult for people to maintain.
