I've always been a fan of Kenny Singleton but his comments yesterday bothered me. After A-Rods HR it was almost blasphemous when he brought up the names of greats Willie Mays & Stan Musial. When he almost proudly said that A-Rod was only 12 HRs behind Willie Mays & that his RBI put him ahead of Stan Musial. How he said this without gagging is a miracle in itself. Especially when you consider how A-Rod got to those accomplishments to begin with. Very disappointed in Kenny.
while I didn't hear it, it is actually what the records show... and until MLB puts marks on players/records connected or associated with steroids, it was correct. I do agree that it is hard to stomach the fact that he cheated to get his way here... but he is in the record books whether we like it or not...
I was just surprised that Kenny seemed to have unjustly glorified the moment. IMO he should have said nothing. I would have expected such brown nosing from Kay, Sterling, Waldman or even the idiot Cone. But Kenny, I didn't expect that.
Long time fans know to ignore these things. Saw Willie Mays being interviewed one time and heard him say his greatest achievement in baseball was that his accomplishments were made using his own body. We who saw Mickey, Willie, The Duke, Aaron, Killibrew, Kaline and the like are extremely fortunate. The only current Yankees on board worth of mentioning with those greats are Jeter, Mo, damn Andy why the HGH?
I got to enjoy watching Mays during the last 10 years or so of his career. And I can't help but wonder what his feelings are regarding his godson. I'm guessing MAJOR disappointment.
I was the kid who would get into a war when someone argued Willie was better than our Mick. When Singleton said that, he lost me. For a fellow player, a good player to compare the 2 is only necessary on the night, if and when Arod breaks it, and only as a sidebar to the game. Otherwise, putting a lifetime ambassador of the game in the same sentence as one of the biggest, if not the biggest narcissist to ever play the game is sinful.
