J-Webb Nation is facing a coup now that the Bears have cranked up a competition at right tackle that was only talked about previously. J'Marcus Webb was demoted to the second team Sunday the first practice since he was beaten for a sack of Jay Cutler in one of 10 snaps for the quarterback in Friday's exhibition opener at Carolina. Coach Marc Trestman has referenced a competition at the position but this marked the first time it has been opened up with rookie fifth-round pick Jordan Mills running with the starters. The plan is for Mills to practice the majority of the week with the first team. Trestman wouldn't commit to it but that means it is likely Mills will start Thursday against the Chargers at Soldier Field in the Bears' second exhibition game. Maybe Webb would have been challenged for his job sooner if Jonathan Scott wasn't still sidelined with a right knee issue that could lead to arthroscopic surgery. But someone else is finally being given an opportunity to win the job after Mills impressed coaches against the Panthers. Not lost in the switcheroo was first-round pick Kyle Long being inserted at right guard over James Brown who started against the Panthers. "I wouldn't draw any conclusions about what's happened today" Trestman said. "It really is part of our plan to find the best five over the course of training camp and in Week 2 (of preseason) this is the way we're starting." But if the Bears felt good about Webb and if he'd shown consistency that has been lacking throughout his career they would not be turning to the 163rd pick in the draft 28 days before the regular-season opener.
