I feel those 2 balls that Romine tried to frame cost him last night. Girardi's man crush on Stewart has to end. I just got a feeling Romine is close to busting out. Where with Stewart there is nothing to bust out.
...I don't think it's any kind of man crush, I think it's just common sense...while more offense would be nice, neither Romine nor Stewart are going to give you that...and if that's the case, it comes down to having solid defense behind the dish...and Stewart is head and shoulders above Romine. ...edit...also, Weaver is pretty tough on RHed batters...and Romine struggles vs RHed pitching.
...messiah, I think we were all a little spoiled by having Posada's bat for so many years, but it came at a cost, which was his lack of defense. There just are not that many premium catchers that excel on both sides of the ball. Stewart is a very capable defensive catcher and while he's no offensive beast by any means, he at least makes contact and does not strike out every 3rd or 4th AB...the pitchers love throwing to Stewart and he's been very good at throwing out base runners...I think he gets much more hate than he deserves.
The kids in the minors might end up being good bats so we shall see. In the meantime defense is important since Romine is struggling behind the dish.
...yeah, Sanchez, though he's still only 20 years old, continues to impress...we could also see Mason Williams and Tyler Austin in a couple of years.
I understand that the need for defense behind the plate is needed, and your point about Weaver is a very valid. I just believe that Romine is capable of hitting better than what we have seen. With an afternoon game tomorrow, then we will see if Romine is in there?
