Can't hurt, let him platoon with Overbay. It will be interesting who they let go to open the roster spot. It has to be between Wells, Hafner, is Cruz still on the 40 man, and then there is always hope this is the first of 2 moves. Yankees To Sign Mark Reynolds By Charlie Wilmoth [August 15 at 7:11pm CST] The Yankees have agreed to terms with Mark Reynolds, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. Heyman: Yankees agree to sign Mark Reynolds By Mike Axisa Via Jon Heyman: The Yankees have agreed to sign corner infielder Mark Reynolds. Because he was designated for assignment and released by the Indians, they only owe him the pro-rated portion of the league minimum. Heyman says four teams had interest. The deal is not yet official. Reynolds, 29, hit .205/.307/.373 (93 wRC+) with 15 homers before being cut by the Tribe. As I explained in last week’s mailbag, he was very good for the first 50 games but terrible for the last 49. Reynolds did hit .215/.333/.411 (111 wRC+) against lefties though, and that’s why the Yankees signed him. He’ll presumably platoon with Lyle Overbay at first base and see time at first base as well. The Yankees will need to clear both a 25-man and 40-man roster spot to accommodate Reynolds, but that won’t be too difficult. They’re already carrying a 13-man pitching staff and could transfer either Zoilo Almonte (ankle) or Luis Cruz (knee) to the 60-day DL. If he performs well, I suppose the Yankees could look to retain Reynolds for next season as a part-time corner infielder/DH.
Exactly, let hope he hits for the next 6 weeks. To be honest, I don't want to see Overbay against a lefty ever again unless he is on another team.
Oild Southern song: Picking up paw paws puttin' 'em in a basket. Mark Reynolds *^*^&^%%^&^&. Hey Cash, you gonna sign Grady Sizemore, from what I understand he is looking for a place to play.
He should be better against lefties than Overbay, and can get into one here and there, which they need. It sucks they have to do this but he does offer a small improvement, when you're the worst hitting team in the AL you take the scraps when they fall.
Okay so I'm really not 6'2 I'm actually 6'1 1/2 But what the hell, even a slight improvement at this point is better then nothing.
What the hell lets give him a try. Overbay has been pretty bad against left handers maybe they catch lightening in a bottle with Reynolds. What do I know.
Reynolds got released by a contending team, and no contending team picked him up. What does that tell you?
If you actually look at Reynolds's number after his hot start, you pretty much get a worse version of Vernon Wells after his hot start. Why on earth would the Yankees want another Vernon Wells?
...strictly platoon players. ...then again, the Yanx are known for fawning over players who have owned them in the past.
This is nothng more than putting more make up on a really ugly girl. Doesn't cover up the real issues. Those aren't going away anytime soon.
...actually rick, in a platoon roll vs LHed pitching it's a considerable improvement over what Overbay gives...100 points higher OBP & SLG and .200 points higher OPS.
Supposed to do? They are supposed to have a farm that matters and have a roster that doesnt include declining players at every position. But thats what it is, so they sign one crap player after another and hope for the best. So its a marginal upgrade, yipee, doesnt really change much and thats the point. Cashman is the highest paid GM there is, and this is what the New York Yankees are reduced to. Kinda sad, isn't it.
What are they supposed to do? C'mon 59. How about not spending the entire season living off the DFA wire? One reject comes in, one reject gets released, once reject comes in to replace the reject just released, one reject gets released, one reject replaces him, and so on, so on..... This "plan" to construct a roster has been fucking ridiculous - it goes all the way back to a half-assed off-season when Cashman spent his time whoring around and hurting himself repelling. And we shouldn't hear about that $$$ got in the way - $$$ spent on has-beens Youk and Wells = $$$ that could have been spent on 5 players who actually can play. Injuries? Who didn't see Jeter and Arod missing time after last season? Inaction? - Granderson and Hughes should have been traded this past off-season, knowing that they would not be re-signed after this year. Catcher? What was the plan for catcher - Stewart all the way? The minor league system? - the only thing the Yankees have on their 'farm' are cows, pigs, chickens, and roosters. They certainly don't have players, or instructional coaches that can assist in making the talent better. Signing Mark Reynolds represents everything about this team that is screwed up.
