It's on the IOC to move the Olympics to a safer country. Even if the USA were to invade Russia and get rid of the anti-gay laws there is no way we could protect gay athletes and fans in that country from the mobs there that are beating and/or killing suspected gay people.
Jimmy Carter had the US boycott the 1980 Olympics due to the Russians invading Afghanistan. It was a joke. The Russkies were there for all of Reagan's two terms afterwards. The losers in the whole thing were the athletes. We can learn from history what didn't work.
It's not protecting the people from the angry mobs. It's protecting what our president promised. And why did our country sit out in the 80's when the Olympics were in Russia? Wasn't it of protests?
But that didn't involve our citizens. So what happens if the Russians arrest the gay athletes from America? I know a few announcers that will be arrested too. The sentence is 10 years.
Read it again. I was replying to your "carter protesting being a bad thing". Referring Afghanistan wasn't about our citizens. Our athletes are exactly our citizens; which holds more weight.
I'm no expert and I honestly haven't followed it as closely as others because I don't have a dog in the fight but hasn't gay rights advanced farther during Obama's time in office then any other president? Seems like there are a lot more states that allow gay marriage. Changes in how the military views homosexuality. I can see where there is still a lot to be done and or changed but we're having a lot more public discussions about gay rights in this country than I can ever recall having. I'm just not understanding what your complaint is about Obama's promises and the protection of gays at the Olympics in Russia.
The state passes those laws sly. We may soon find out if Russia arrests some of the commentators and athletes.
If you know the laws of a country before going there that's on you if you decide to break them and get arrested for it. If you and your wife go to Dubai, you guys decide to sunbath naked at the beach and then get arrested what do you think the USA should do?
So, if gay athletes go to the Olympics, knowing the law of the land says that they will be arrested, are they asking for it? Go Blazers
Do people who go to other countries to smuggle drugs back to the USA ask to be arrested? No, but they know the risks.
This reminds me of a story that happened when I was on business to Malaysia. When you descend into Malaysia, there is a warning that drug deals and smuggling are a capital offense. This means you get no trial and put to death. Anyway, there were these Australian kids that brought some drugs with them into Malaysia when they were on holiday. They were caught and were sentenced to death. Australia kicked and screamed, but Malaysia still killed them. End of story
But Australian politicians have made promises not to allow capital punishment. Why are they breaking their promises? Why are they allowing capital punishment? Why didn't they do anything? Australia sucks!
