Hughes is in line to make his regular scheduled start on Sunday vs the Orioles but Girardi will be keeping a close eye on him. Seriously, what the hell does that even mean?
It means they have nobody else better than Hughes to take his place and they're holding their breathe with him because this is their season.
Nobody better? C'mon Rusty, at this point ANYONE not named Joba in that bullpen could do better. IMO this would be the perfect time to see what guys like Warren or Clairborne could do. Nobody better? Hell.....they can't do any worse.
Sad state of affairs when you dont have anyone better than one of the worst starters in the sport to turn to.
The Yankees simply do not want to admit failure when it comes to Hughes and Joba, so they stubbornly will keep Hughes in the rotation and Joba on the roster as a way of prolonging the facade. They refuse to acknowledge that these guys have been on the major league roster for 7 seasons now, and neither is a fraction of the overhyped, overvalued talent they have been held up to be. There were countless opportunities over the last few years to unload these guys, get value for them in trades, but the Yankees failed to take objective views of their skills and now have two guys who absolutely have no value whatsoever. It's like holding on to a stock too long - even though the stock price is dropping and the stock's forecasts are trending down - false bravado and ignorance prevents you from unloading it while it still can give you some return before it bottoms out. These guys have bottomed out.
Perfectly stated. And of course there are no actual options in the farm either. Any of the ones you would think about are of course hurt. But even still, Hughes is hurting this team each time he starts. Pretending that is not the case, is just pretending.
Adam Warren has not looked good lately, I think if he were he would get the ball, Claiborne is a career reliever, they're not starting him. Again, they have nobody. If Hughes fails again and the season is lost we'll probably see someone from the minors get the ball with the call ups.
Remember when you sat back, watched a Yankee Game, knew that a loss today would be a win tomorrow. This season you wonder how far a starter can go, if the pen can hold, if the offense will show up. You wonder why some of the "loads" are still around, or why GMs like Beane, Duquette, Dombrowski, get pieces for their team while ours contemplates his next non baseball related venture and the owners don't hold him accountable. Lots of questions fellow Yankee Fans as this season winds down. As Ambrosia once sand "I keep holding on, to yesterday" that may be all we have starting in '14.
Again, they CAN'T do any worse. And as far as Clairborne I respectfully disagree with the CAREER reliever tag. There's just no such animal. Ask Eckersly, Gossage, Smoltz & MANY others that managed to do both in there careers. Give him a shot. And if not him how about Huff? I believe he was once a starter.
I think Huff was mentioned, wasn't Claiborne sent down when Jeter came back? Continuing to run Hughes out especially in Yankee Stadium is pure disaster.
My point exactly. I mean if ever there was an automatic loss he's it. I'll bet the bookies have a field day every time clueless Joe hands him the ball.
I did hear that Pettitte will get the start Sunday with Bomb Hughes getting the start against Chicago on Monday.
I heard the same thing today. Either way this guy should just not be starting. He's 4-13 on the year & in his last 9 starts he's 0-6 with a 5.64 era. But hey............that's Joe for you.
