Rookie defenseman Seth Jones paired with Shea Weber — it indeed seems like a possibility at some point this season for the Predators.

The 6-foot-4 Jones Nashville’s first-round draft pick this year has played the right side throughout his career and the veteran Weber is also a right defenseman.

At Predators rookie camp on Thursday however coach Barry Trotz divulged that he had Jones working on the left side this summer.

“In your long-term vision you’d like to see that both of them at some point playing together” Trotz said. “You’re going to see that in the preseason and some of the scrimmages. I’ll do that on purpose to let them rub shoulders a little bit.”

The decision to put Jones and Weber together at least for a trial run is a fascinating one. Jones is just 18 years old and has yet to make the roster. Weber is 28 and a two-time Norris Trophy finalist.

Also Weber and Roman Josi seemed to have chemistry last season when they were put together. Josi is a natural left defenseman.

“Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of watching him” Jones said of Weber. “He’s a fantastic player and done a lot of great things here.”

Asked about the progress of his move to the left side Jones said: “It’s not too bad. There are little subtle differences you have to make here and there and specific plays. But it’s going pretty well.”

Jones will have a chance to show how far he has come in the next three days when he and the rest of the Predators rookies will be in Florida for a three-game tournament against the Panthers Lightning and Bruins rookies.
