They asked a lot of him innings wise this year and it shows. His velocity is way down, his pitches aren't moving and to put it perfectly he has shown himself to be human. It's crazy to say this but they might of been better with Soriano closing again.
His velocity isn't really down. He's been down in the 89 range at times for the last few years. He has shown time and again that his velocity really doesn't matter much. As for Soriano, Mo still has been better than he has been and the numbers absolutely bear that out. Mo's ERA is more than a full run lower, has the lower WHIP and a much better ERA+. Mo has seen some tough stretches in other seasons-had blown saves and higher ERA's. He was certainly worse in 2007 for example. Yeah he has had some struggles but this thread is no different than the ones that were put out there at various times over the last 13/14 years.
Greats are always missed. Especially when there's no clear cut replacement. That being said he was terrible in August with three blown saves in five days and now had two blown saves in three days at the start of September.
Well, Mo did say that his tank was almost empty when he announced his retirement in ST, and he looks to be a man of his word. Hopefully, he can finish this season with a few more saves, no more blown saves, and walk into the sunset in style. If part of the Yankees off-season plan is to try and convince him (and Pettitte) to come back - then someone needs to be fired. These guys have given everything they have at their advanced ages, and because the Yankees have no one in the farm system close to take their spots after all theses years - disgraceful. The ownership and management of this team makes me sick.
You would have thought that this team would have planned better for the day guys like Jeter, Rivera & Pettitte couldn't go anymore. But then again they didn't exactly lineup a solid replacement for Posada either.
As much as he has finally become mortal this last month or so thinking back on his career of excellence with the yanks at this stage of his career and everything hes done for the yanks and the fans no matter what games he blows from now till the end of the season this man only gets cheers from me.
Agreed. And I feel the same way about Jeter. Hell in Mantle's last season I cheered his 237 average all year long.
Really? All I heard was montero and romaine...sanchez...murphy...now no one? the dimished mind of a soon to be 40 year old
