In what was a thrilling Davis Cup semifinals, the defending champions, the Czech Republic, cruised past the Argentinian team 3-0. By winning both singles matches on Friday, and then going on to close the "best of 5 series" with a 3-0 win by defeating the Argentinian team of Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballo in doubles action Saturday.
The Czech's, who beat Spain last year 3-2, were definitely surprised to see Spain defeated by one of the other team's who reached the semi-finals this year. Truly an underdog story, the Canadian team has defeated both Spain and Italy, thus earning a semi-final birth.
The Canadian team was ready to face 2010 finalists, Serbia, in the other semifinals. After an intense first night, with Canada's N.11 ranked in the world -Milos Raonic - defeating N.23 in the world - Janko Tipsarevic. Although Raonic knew he was in a hard battle, especially considering the carefully chosen clay court the Serbians had chosen for their war with Canada with a finals birth on the line; however was able to prevail in 5 sets. Meanwhile, N.1 in the world, Novak Djokovic dominated N.41 in the world, Vasek Popisil, who brought his A-game. Losing to Rafael Nadal a week before in the US Open Men's Finals, Djokovic came to the Davis cup to play. He was the deciding factor on Sunday, as he was the only singles competitor to win both their matches. Canada looked to be on the verge of upsetting Serbia when Daniel Nestor and Vasek Popisil knocked off the Serbian team of Nenad Zimonjic and Illja Bozoljac. Choosing to replace Tipsarevic in the last minute, in order to rest him for his singles match on Sunday, Serbia was defeated by the Canadians in a thrilling battle in 5 sets. Both doubles teams had beaten their quarterfinal opponent in 5 sets, winning the deciding (tie breaking) set 15-13, Canada defeated the Serbians in the deciding set 10-8.
Serbia will face the defending champions, the Czech Republic in November.
