1) The Yankees are 9th in the league in pitching (4.01) 2) The Yankees are 12th in the league in batting (246) 3) The Yankees are 13th in the league in home runs (136) 4) The Yankees are 12th in the league in OBP (.310) 5) The Yankees are 10th in the league in runs scored (619) 6) The Yankees are LAST in the league in total bases I could go on but..........why bother?
Watching the post game videos on River Avenue Blues Pettitte seemed to blame himself for the loss, Girardi & Sorianoa said they did, we gotta, tip your cap to Dickey. I got in late and did not know till later that the Yankees stranded five in the first tow innings, why was I not surprised. Pathetic thing is that if Cleveland can get by Kansas City today, they may be able to run the table.
2008 in what sense? that we finished the season with a record of 89 - 73, 3rd in AL East (Behind Tampa and Boston), 8 games back or that it was the last season in the old stadium?
If they had the same lineup we've seen the past couple of weeks things would be very different right now, I do believe that, and if Tex were in the mix even better, so I see no reason to look at the overall stats, they've been one of the most injury riddled teams baseball has ever seen, it's a valid excuse this time.
Every team has injuries they have to get over but this club was just without so much offense for a majority of the season. They would certainly of been a wild card team had the lineup stayed healthy for most of the season. The pitching from the likes of CC would've still been a major issue.
So Rusty are you saying that had we had a full season of A-Rod, Jeter, Tex etc. It would have over come the enept pitching. It's my belief that you need BOTH!.
I would agree with you but it's also a sign of the mediocrity all around baseball. The wild card spots in the AL are all about who's not going to collapse worse. With anywhere close to a healthy squad the Yankees certainly grab one of the wild card spots.
And Granderson. Yes, that's what I'm saying, those guys would have given them at least 10 more wins despite the pitching.
You have to objectively look at who they were missing for most of the season Rick. I know we're all upset and angry right now but they were without a ton of offense. Then they started losing the backups to the players they lost. As I posted in another thread the loss of Gardner was pretty much the nail in the coffin.
I understand what you're saying mess & for the most part I agree. My anger is mostly aimed at the one's who created this mess. I mean throwing money at guys like Wells, Youkilis & Hafner was a joke. And not getting the proper people to replace the injured players at the trade dead line is a further joke.
The players just weren't available this year. Soriano was as big an addition as anybody could've made and it didn't help. The guy has lead in homers and RBIs in the span since coming over. How can you do better than that? The problem is that the pitching went south and they lost guys again. The real disaster is that the shelf seems to be bare in the farm system. Unless somebody comes in and surprises us. Guys can leave but you still have to spend money to replace them.
As much as I hate to agree with Harold Reynolds but the Rangers lost a ton of people through free agency, the DL ate their pitching, and of course the suspensions got Cruz. While they did add Garza he hasn't been much help. The Rangers once contenders look like they are enroute to pretender. I've got a feeling Washington will be out job hunting with his buddy Soscia after this season.
