Should the Blazers sign Drew Gooden?

and dump Joel Freeland?

Yeah. I think it depends if the real intent is to win now. I think signing Mo Williams signals an authenticity to the idea that they do want to win. So if that is indeed the case. Why not?

No! Freeland has two years left on his contract so regardless of his basketball skills from a strategic roster position the team needs to keep the flexibility of including him in a trade or waiving him with the stretch provision or some other type of move.

If the Blazers need to cut a non-rotational player I would first cut Barton or Watson since they are on expiring deals. Neither are expected to be in the second unit.

It doesn't make sense to eat a guaranteed contract unless it is for a player that will play minutes on the team with production above the current options. Gooden falls far short of that level. If the team has an injury to a player during the season they could then make a move like this to bring in a big man. I think a Dleague call up or other random available vet will have a production level similar to Drew Gooden.

 

Signing Gooden and playing Robinson and Leonard are not mutually exclusive.

Freeland has a negative trade value, we have to give a team something to get rid of him. He's a borderline 15th man.

I'm suggesting making the trade before we have an injury or we'll probably have to either play Freeland or sign and play a DLeaguer as Gooden is likely not to be available.

I'm not sure Gooden is any better than a DLeaguer. Even if he is he most definitely is not worth the $6million dollars Paul Allen will have to eat to cut Freeland.

 

You know you are right. Age shouldn't have anything to do with it. Forget he is 32, he is just plain broken down.

But on the flip side he is a big man and they often last longer in the league since they do not have to rely on as much athleticism. So if we don't care about age, and we want an injured big man who was with the Bucks last year, go with Przybilla. He is only 2 years older, and he is 7'1" .
