I haven't played a video game in years, is it too late?

I have never owned a system and it's been like 10 years since I've even played a single game.

Am I just too far gone to learn how to play now? What system should I get if I just want one game console? If I were to buy 3 games, which ones should I go for? How much would the package you suggest run me?

Depends, do you want to play games that have been out for a while, or do you want the newest? It's never too late to get into games, didn't you see those old folks playing Wii games?

You're jumping in at an awkward time. New consoles start rolling out in November. If you run out and buy a PS3 or a 360 right now it will be obsolete soon. Not that you can't still use it but there won't be much in the way of new games being released on it.

The next systems are PS4 and Xbox1. Both will cost around $400 with games at about $60. Another gamepad for playing with a friend will cost $50 unless the systems ship with two which wouldn't be typical. Rechargeable batteries, online access, etc. will add on cost but are optional.

The games you'd want depend on your taste. Sports games, shooters, RPG's, etc. are all radically different. What did you play before?

If you want nba games, there's 2k and Live, but Live is going to be Xbox 1 and Ps4 exclusive.

I figure one football game, one driving game and one shooter game.

How much do you want to spend? That's probably the biggest question.

Not sure if I will, but I figure if I decide to get a system I'd like to keep it under $500. Perhaps it makes more sense to buy an older system on craigslist and see if I would actually use it before getting a new system. Could I buy a recent but not new system and games for $300, that would be great.

For football it will be either Madden or NCAA. Not much in the way of choice. Either console.

I wouldn't say there is a knockout driving game but Gran Turismo 7 will be out on the PS4 and has a strong following. It is a meticulous racing simulation. Burnout is an arcade game that usually gets great reviews. Several different iterations of that game. I dunno if a new one is on the way... seems likely. There's always the Need for Speed series as well. They are usually fun to play.

There are lots of different shooting games. Hyper-competitive multi-player is dominated by Call of Duty and to a lesser extent Battlefield. Both offer single player campaigns but a lot of people I know that play those games never touch it. They only like to play online. New versions are on the way.

For more story-driven shooters, Destiny is being released by the company that made Halo. It has a lot of momentum behind it. It is science fiction. The Metro series is science fiction as well but much darker and more punishing. Far Cry is very atmospheric and BioShock is artsy and beautiful. Dead Island takes the shooter genre into the zombie genre pretty well and makes for a fun game. Borderlands is good too if you want to play online but with a less serious tone. For a different experience, Skyrim is a medieval first-person game that can play like a shooter but also offers RPG elements.

Madden NFL sucks now, don't bother with it. This system will be obsolete soon, but it sounds like you want to be more of a casual gamer, and it has a very large backlog of games that you will be able to pick up for cheap. The ps4 will be $400, but will be getting new games.

Yeah if you don't care about getting the latest titles, expect big price drops on the Xbox 360 & PS4 and related items come Christmas time and especially in the early new year. Both have extensive back catalogues of games you can pick up used on the cheap. If you haven't played them, they're new to you.

If you play enough, you'll be fine. Just takes practice like anything else, and you can't let yourself get frustrated. Just play and you'll get better. Of course, you'll also have to get used to 12 year olds calling you names and telling you they slept with your mother.

Also, we're ignoring Nintendo. The Wii-U is a console built for casual gamers. You can get shaved-down versions of sports games like Madden for it. The Wii-U thrives on old-school style gaming like platformers and side-scrollers. It is the only way you can play games like Super Mario & Zelda. Nintendo consoles and games are usually inexpensive compared to the offerings from Sony & Microsoft.

The Wii U doesn't have the backlog though, and Nintendo's third party support sucks. I don't think EA even makes sports game for it and it's only been out for a year.

You're right, apparently EA isn't giving Wii-U any 2014 games. I think there is a Madden 2013 for the Wii-U though.

For under $300 I would go with this. You get GTA and a month a PS Plus we will get you an "Instant Game Collection" that includes Saints Row: The Third, Uncharted 3, Little Big Planet, Little Big Planet Karting, Resident Evil Chronicles HD Collection and a bunch of other PSN games (PlayStation Network games). And new games are released each each month if you decide to get a year subscription of $50. Best $50 I have ever spent.
