Not excited for this card. Jones will dominate Gustaf, mitrione will knock out schaub.

A lot of people complaining about the decision online but I felt that Jones won the third-fifth rounds. Imagine if Gus hadn't been gassed in the fifth?

    Good night of fights!

Francis Carmont needs a top-5 win and then he'll be getting a shot. Not the most exciting style but he gets the job done. Not sure why Joe Rogan didn't see that coming--most of Carmont's fights have been him dominating from top position.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is ready now--possible opponent for Ben Henderson?

Brendan Schaub took advantage of a somewhat undisciplined Matt Mitrione tonight. Reminded me of his fight with Kongo. Props to Schaub for taking some good punches tonight and working through it.

Renan Barao looked great--he was fighting an unorthodox striker but maintained his focus. The spinning back kick to the neck looked really painful. Kind of reminded me of the Aldo-Swanson finish.

Jon Jones and Alex Gustafsson put on a classic. To me, Jones looked flat. He didn't dig deep on his take-down attempts. It's possible he rushed his return. Gustafsson did well with the stick-and-move approach but to me he took a lot of shots he didn't need to and that weighed on the judges minds. He seemed to run out of steam in the fourth round after Jones blitzed him. I felt the first round went to Gusto and the second was close, possibly a draw, with the remaining three going to Jones. Seems there are a lot of people who think Gusto won but I imagine there are a lot of people who just wanted him to win so bad they convinced themselves that he won the first three rounds. They were close.

Jones looked like hell after the fight: busted eye, spitting blood, swollen mouth, bad leg--this was a major challenge for him. Scary to think he might come out in five or six months and be a much improved fighter on account of this experience. Given where he already was that's terrible news for the division and the next challenger Glover Teixeira. As for Gustafsson I don't feel like he's going to get a better chance to beat Jones than he had tonight. Jones wasn't on his A-game and he couldn't get the job done. There are a lot of fights for him in the division (Nogueira, Davis rematch, Evans, etc.) to build back up. He's definitely going to be a much more popular fighter after this one. I imagine he's expedited another event in Sweden as well.

There is an injured heavyweight that Brendan Schaub might be able to step in for in an upcoming (soon) fight, per DFW at the press conference.

Haven't watched the fights yet, downloading them as I post this, I just have a thought about Jones and his foot injury. Is it possible he's already physically peaked? He snapped the toe in his last fight and in this fight his coach Mike Winklejohn stated that he may have shattered his foot this time. Is his lower body, which is notoriously made fun of on the internet for being small compared to his upper body, buckling under his size? I think its quite possible that we've seen the best of Jon Jones already and he may be hampered by lower body injuries for the rest of his career. Just a thought.

Can't wait to watch the fight however. I'm sure the fans want to see Gustaffson/Jones II so I imagine Gustaffson will be in the fast track to a rematch. One or two wins and I can see him getting there. There are absolutely 0 contenders in the LHW division outside of Glover.

Personally, I scored it 1-2-3 for Gustaffson, 4-5 for Jones. But the 3rd was close, IMO. I think it was closer than the 2nd. Not gonna argue it though, I want a rematch.

Shattered foot ranks up there with cracked skull. What's his foot made of, ice?

Both guys have been released from hospital with no serious injuries.

The narrative today is that this fight will elevate Jones to star status and 'get him some fans'. Sounds about right.

In terms of his lower body mass, it might be that he'll always been spindly, or that he can't put on more leg muscle without moving up to heavyweight.

His kickboxing was exposed a little bit last night. The creative moves he's used in past fights didn't come fluidly, he just kept spamming them. It's possible he hasn't evolved as much since his last few fights. It's also possible he hasn't been working on his wrestling and took it for granted. Full credit to Gusto.

I dont know if Jones won fans last night, but Gusto sure did. Jones is a known name, I think he's made all the fans he'll get. He's been in the limelight a couple of years now. Gusto on the other hand probably became a UFC fan household name.

He's been in the limelight but he's been a pariah. Fans can't relate to him. Even after the fight his speech was pretty aloof. Seeing him get beat up a little and setting up a rematch with someone who seems to be his equal should work to humanize him. Maybe.
