I wonder, when I think of the dichotomy between sex and gender, if people can/will do something similar with race/ethnicity? I mean, if someone is born biologically white, but is raised in a black neighborhood, identifying with black culture, should that person not be permitted to self-identify as black?

Yes, I was thinking about Steve Martin being born a poor black child when I wrote the post. I even considered including an anti-The-Jerk disclaimer.

In any case, I think the question is valid. There are articles and discussions about trans-ethnicity, but it's interesting to see that most dismiss the notion, even those who wholly embrace transgender-ness. Which raises the question, what's the material difference?

Mediocre Man, you say that transgender people should try to make reality fit the gender they were assigned at birth. As Further pointed out, most have. And it doesn't work. Would it work for you? You are male, you have lived your whole life as a boy and man, could any therapy make you think of yourself as a woman, live as a woman, totally identify as a woman, present yourself to others as a woman, if straight marry a man and life as his wife? Every day, every minute, for your entire life? I doubt it. So why do you think it would work for other people?

Further, I might dance with that guy but frankly, he looks awfully young for me. Talk about robbing the cradle!

Sadly but not shockingly the young woman has been subjected to so much on line hate, including death threats and suggestions she kill herself, that she now is saying maybe she should have just accepted being miserable and hating herself her whole life. Do PapaG, MarAzul, Mediocre Man, El Presidente and other bigots consider this a great victory? That a 16 year old girl wants to kill herself rather than be herself? That she regrets being herself and wishes she could live a lie her entire life rather than getting death threats?

Personally I think I agree with your points. But you are suggesting the environment or upbringing is the catalyst to the transformation. That would be like the parents dress the boy as a girl and treat him like one; transforming him to a girl.

I think the better constitution is schizophrenia running in the family. Genetic...

I guess my question is how is this different from someone believing they are Jesus, or believe they can fly, or believe there is a plot against them and they start shooting people? They were also born that way.

Clever use of implication. But even in the first two cases, as long as they don't hurt others, what business is it of ours? Jesus thought he was Jesus too.

Race and ethnicity are extremely problematic classifications. They have been used in the past to mean almost anything. The most accepted definitions that I am aware of is that an ethnic group is made up of people that share culture and language. My understanding is that "race" as a classification has fallen out of use, since most people use it to mean "skin color." And as we all (hopefully) know, race has no essential properties.

So, if we're not talking about skin color, then we're talking about culture and language. I've met people like this. White kid who grew up in NE Portland and speaks in what people on this board would call "Ebonics." We've all met that kid. Is he black or white?

Well, there are really two different meanings of those words. Skin color, and culture. Does he have black skin? No. Is he a part of black culture? It appears so.

Now, when it comes to people's self-identification, we should never be talking about permission. People can self identify however they choose to. The question is whether or not they will be accepted to the group they are identifying as. If this white kid can speak the language and knows the culture and is accepted in black communities.... then why not think of him as "black?"

I think it's a strong consideration in the case of adoption of a black child by white parents (and maybe vice versa). The idea being that such adoptions should not rob the child of its ethnicity.

He asked for all of this attention, including the negative attention that was surely to come from it. You just can't put shit on youtube and expect flowers and butterflies from the world. Reality is a bitch and this dude is living in a fantasy world.

Its his own fault for starting a youtube viral campaign and being an attention whore. This was all voluntary. When you make a public spectacle of yourself, you need to be able to deal with the negative consequences.

This "sob" video is just more of the same, just him and his fucked up shit whining and trying to garner more sympathy.

I'm going to have to agree to some extent. I mean if you advertise to a worldwide media, obviously you get all attention. If you want to be left alone, then don't do anything to make yourself a public figure.

I see actors, musicians, professional players, etc all get the fame and get pissed when being approached by fans or naysayers. Obviously this shemale had positive and negative comments.

Just thought people should know that "tranny" and "shemale" are pejoratives.

I know 50% of you guys wont give a shit and will actually start using those terms more often once you google what pejorative means.
