West Linn police often make traffic stops while working in uniform. On Saturday night, they stopped a driver while wearing costumes.

Detective Mike Francis and Officer Brad Moyle were wearing old-time police constable costumes while making a foot patrol through the Willamette Living History Tour's celebration of West Linn's centennial, held in the Willamette Historic District. Actors had re-staged a visit by pioneering aviator Silas Christofferson, whose 1913 stunt take-off from the roof of the old Multnomah Hotel -- now an Embassy Suites -- made big headlines.

Around 9:30 p.m., they spotted a motorist maneuvering around the barriers on Willamette Falls Drive, where actors in period costumes and city residents were gathered around a 1911 Model T Ford and a 1913 Overland. So they yelled at the driver to stop.

"We displayed our badges, but I don't think he believed we were real cops," Francis said. "So, when he started to drive off again, we yelled, 'We're really the West Linn police. And we're really stopping you. Turn the car off!'"

This time, the driver stayed put. When Moyle approached the driver-side window, he smelled alcohol and called patrol officers to help.

Police -- in modern uniforms -- soon arrived and arrested Dennis K. McCleery, 65, of West Linn on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was taken to the Clackamas County Jail, where he was booked, cited and released.

Francis said he and Moyle rented the period "bobby" costumes from a Portland shop so they would appear to fit in better with the actors and the setting.

"It was great to be out there," Francis said. "It was good for people to see us in a different light -- and were still able to do our jobs."

Sounds like a real mindfuck.

It would have been better if they had been dressed as donuts.

Ha, no fair deleting the post... Nope, not lost, just disappointed that there weren't really a series of recent arrests by police officers wearing period costumes.

He can delete your post but he can't delete your quote of his post before he deleted it.

This thread is historic, in that I learned that an airplane took off from a roof.
