Just shows how stupid, out-dated, and destructive that self-imposed 'no negotiating during the season' policy is. Red Sox were able to lock in Pedroia without any drama during the season. Letting Cano hit FA = ultimate failure by the Yankees. He should have been signed last off-season, or any time before the trade deadline, and if he didn't sign - he should have been dealt. Getting a pick for losing a FA is fine, but when the player you lose is your best player - getting only a pick in return is a disaster.
...it's nothing but posturing. It's what happens in negotiations. Start high, the other side counters with a lower figure, and they meet in the middle. ...and word is, the Yanx did try to lock him up during this season. ...but he's not getting 10 years, and he's not getting $30 Mil.
I was just going to print this myself. The numbers are just ridiculous & should should not even be considered let alone taken seriously. No one is giving him a contract like that. I agree with Mel 6 years TOPS!

Get your best free agent offer and then come back to us. Of course you run the risk of the player signing and not giving you a chance to match but it is what it is. I'm tired of seeing teams bid against themselves. What teams would come even close to those years and dollar figure? The Red Sox are out, The Tigers aren't doing it and Texas knows better. The Dodgers could but why would they? They too wouldn't be bidding against anyone by offering something like that just to do so.
^^^problem with that is you never know what the player's agent is saying about offers from other teams is true.

OK... this brings up a question though... I know at some point, not sure if it is still the case, but there was language in A-Rod's contract that said he was to be the highest paid player in the game. Do we know if that is still the case? Does that mean then that, hypothetically of course, if Cano were to get $30.5/year that A-Rod would then get something like $31/year?

One thing that helped with Pedroia is that he truly wanted to stay a Boston. The Yankees shot themselves in the foot by letting Arod & CC get away with contract changes. If Cano wants to play with this team in negotiations then let him go. I don't know how others feel but I'm for the Yankees getting better and cheaper. Teams like Oakland and Tampa Bay get max firepower out of people they get off of the scrap heap. With the money the Yankees have they should be able to fix the farm, sign reasonable priced free agents, and if possible make a couple of trades. I'd be willing to see a reload/build instead of signing those past their prime for big salaries and hoping that they could win. They really needed to start working on this club in '10.

As I understand, the offer was somewhere around 7 years/$160M which is substantial for sure, but from an agent and the player's standpoint - is not more (or equal to) what the Yankees are paying other guys on their team. Tex got 8yr/$180M, CC (with the extension) got 8yr/$186M. Many seem (not saying you) seem to want to draw comparisons to what deals Fielder,Pujols. Pedroia, Wright recently got - but the focus is going to be on what the Yankees gave other players. Yes, Arod's is the king of the ridiculous contracts, but my guess (just a guess) is that if the Yankees had offered more to Cano than they pay Tex and CC (8yrs/ say $195M-$200M), he might have taken it, but the fact that it is lower than Tex and CC - never saw him taking that deal. Now is an 8yr/$200M deal worth it? IMO - no, but I think that's where the Yankees are gonna have to go and a lot of that has to do with Cano/Jay-Z making them go more than Tex and CC.
