The honeymoon phase for new Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman ended Sunday in a 40-32 road loss to the Detroit Lions.

They never recovered from surrendering 24 unanswered points in a 7-minute, 36-second span of the second quarter. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns were not enough to overcome quarterback Jay Cutler’s four turnovers and a slew of missed tackles by the defense.

The loss was Trestman’s first in four games as coach. Now, repairs are needed.

“We win and lose as a team,” Trestman said. “All that starts with me. We will go back to work (Monday). We won’t change the way we do business. We will go back to work and get the things done we think we need to do to get better as a football team.”

Cutler and Trestman were satisfied with the quarterback’s decision making on his three interceptions. They credited Lions safety Louis Delmas for making a fine play on the first. Cutler’s execution failed him on the second and third.

“The character we have in that locker room wouldn’t let us stop,” Cutler said. “We kept fighting back. If I tightened up in the first half, hopefully we’d have a different outcome.”

Lions running back Reggie Bush rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. His explosive speed and dynamic cutback ability in the open field were too much for a Bears defense that was repeatedly blocked out of its gaps up front.

Defensive players after the game echoed criticism about their poor tackling, an unnerving message from an historically stout bunch.

“Everything comes down to what we do,” linebacker Lance Briggs said. “If we’re not disciplined, if we’re not getting to where we need to be, things like that are going to happen.”

yep, the honeymoon is officially over. The Bears could have kept Lovie if they wanted to look that bad.

Trestman better figure it out and correct glaring deficiencies or it will be a long season for him and Bears fans.

The guy's not going to fix it all in a few months. I'd give him a little bit more time.

That's fair, but fans have every right to expect improvement. The problem with the Detroit game was that they regressed. Bears were 7-1 against Detroit in their last 8 games.

I was especially disappointed in Cutler, who seemed to display every one of his flaws in a horrible performance.

Let's hope that all the negatives were purged in that game and the team moves forward. They're going to have to be much better against the Saints or it will be a very ugly game.
