Yankees are planning on trying to keep it under 189 next year according to http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/yankees/post/_/id/65652/yankees-magic-number-189 "The thing is, they might not have to spend all that much more, either. Right now, they have $93 million committed to seven players: Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki, Alfonso Soriano and Vernon Wells. If A-Rod and his $25 million paycheck get out down for the year, that number drops to about $68 million." so that leaves $96M to sign 18 players... or a $5.33M average each... still significant... or if we were to loose A-Rod's money for suspension reasons, that would be $121M for 19 players or and average of $6.37M... obviously, they won't all get sizeable offers... Now, if they do find a way to retain Cano which I think is absurd considering his asking price (both $ and years) there should still be some left to go around... BUT... who out there is really worth anything?
...the $189 figure is a goal, not a mandate...the Steins have reiterated twice that it will not be at the expense of putting the best team on the field....and there are players, good players, worth signing. ...Cashman said just today that he has NEVER been told by the owners that the $189 figure is written in stone.
like who? Cano wants too much as of now, so he's out (hopefully) or hopefully his demands come down, McCann, but there aren't good pitchers out there really which we need at least 3 of... too many holes to fill, too much money will be spent unwisely I'm sure of...
...and I want Kate Upton, so what?...do you really think Cano will get 10 years?...or $305 Mil?... ...the Royals may or may not be able to afford Shields...TB may or may not be able to retain Price...and I'm sure there are other options...it's not all doom and gloom.
Price will be in his final year and Tampa is expected to try and move him but of course I think we can all agree that our potential offers won't quite measure up to what they will get from numerous other teams.
Price allegedly doesn't want to play for the Yankees because of the facial hair policies. He's getting bald on top but can grow a beard, for some reason I can see up going to Boston.
which drives it up further... and if they are trying to keep it under the $189M like they have said multiple times, it likely won't happen...
...lol...players say a lot of things about not playing for the Yanx...until of course, they actually end up signing with them.
...what?...do you mean that a lesser number of bidders drive the price up further?...or do you mean acquiring Price would somehow push the Yanx payroll over $189 Mil?...either way, it does not make any sense. ...fwiw, the Steins have also said multiple times that the "goal" of $189 Mil would not be at the expense of putting the best team on the field. Cashman also reiterated yesterday that he has NEVER been told the 189 figure is written in stone.
Sorry, misread what you had said... I thought you said a lot of teams... missed the not... my bad regarding acquiring Price... He would only be a piece of the puzzle... if they are going after McCann, then he'll add a chunk of change... Cano definitely will... the more pieces you add above the average price allowed, obviously, you have less of the pie to deal with for the remaining players you need... and with as many holes as there are to fill (assuming 19 with A-Rod being suspended), you can't keep spending a ton of money on a lot of players... and yes, the $189M is a goal, but honestly, why should they spend more then that? again, not many high quality FA's out there...
...gotcha. ...I'd imagine the ARod situation will go a long way determining how they will spend this off season. And they won't necessarily get all of the "pieces of the puzzle" right away but they have to start somewhere. If they could somehow sign Shields and/or Price and also add McCann that would be a big move going forward because all of those players would be locked up for 4-5 years. Of course resigning Cano would be pretty big as well. ...they may also bring a few of this years Yankee players back.
I don't see the Arod situation clearing up anytime soon....this could go well into next year and spring training.
