    Jadeveon Clowney working to return

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday he wanted to "clear the air" about Jadeveon Clowney and that "we all handled it poorly" last week when Clowney told the Gamecocks' coaches at the last minute he was too injured to play in the game.

Clowney, who has a muscle strain near his rib area, remains questionable for Saturday's game at Arkansas, but Spurrier said his star defensive end was doing all he could to get back onto the field.

"He was in pain. It was diagnosed later, and obviously we all handled it poorly. All of us did," Spurrier said.

Clowney didn't tell the coaches that he couldn't play last week against Kentucky until after the team arrived at the stadium.

Afterward in his postgame press conference, Spurrier was clearly upset over the way it all went down. He said at the time that he would welcome Clowney back to "come play for the team if he wants." Spurrier then added, "But if he doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."

Since then, there have been questions about whether the potential No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft was shutting it down for the season.

Alton Howard: 'Trying to win it'

Tennessee wide receiver Alton Howard says he has received only positive feedback since fumbling in overtime Saturday while trying to stretch the ball across the goal line during the Volunteers' 34-31 loss to No. 7 Georgia.

"Not one person came to me saying anything negative about it," Howard said Tuesday night while talking to the media for the first time since the game. "I've been getting all positive talk. I respect everyone for it."

Howard said he also received encouragement from Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart.

Florida Gators try to stop LSU attack

The Florida Gators expect something closer to a shutout than a shootout when they visit No. 10 LSU on Saturday.

The Tigers (5-1, 2-1 SEC), led by quarterback Zach Mettenberger, are averaging 45 points and 489 yards a game this season.

"We're not going to allow ourselves to let that happen," Florida defensive tackle Darious Cummings said.

No. 17 Florida (4-1, 3-0), meanwhile, hasn't given up 21 points in any of its last 13 league games.

"I don't think anybody in the country is playing better defense than we are," Cummings said. "We haven't even reached our max yet, so I feel we just have that relentless effort and we're not taking no for an answer. We get challenged week in and week out to be the best."

Jadeveon Clowney to start if healthy

All-American Jadeveon Clowney's time on South Carolina's sidelines is apparently finished.

Gamecocks defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said Thursday that the injured Clowney will start if healthy Saturday when No. 14 South Carolina (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) takes on the Razorbacks (3-3, 0-2).

T.J. Yeldon, Kenyan Drake spark No. 1 Alabama's rout of Kentucky

Once No. 1 Alabama got out of its own way, knocking Kentucky from its path became pretty easy on Saturday night.

Just ask T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake, who each ran for two touchdowns as the Crimson Tide brushed off a few early mistakes to blow out the Wildcats 48-7.

No. 25 Missouri improves to 6-0 with upset of No. 7 Georgia

ary Pinkel said No. 25 Missouri won more than a second straight SEC road game when it upset No. 7 Georgia.

"I just think we earned a little more respect," Pinkel said. "The respect level just went up a couple notches.

Receiver Bud Sasser threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to L'Damian Washington in the fourth quarter after quarterback James Franklin left with a shoulder injury and Missouri held off Georgia's comeback attempt to beat the short-handed Bulldogs 41-26 on Saturday.

Johnny Manziel runs for 2 TDs as Texas A&M escapes Ole Miss

Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel had a lot to deal with on Saturday night, including an early injury scare, a feisty Mississippi defense and a few uncharacteristic mistakes.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Johnny Football was back to his usual self.

Manziel threw for 346 yards and ran for two touchdowns while rallying No. 9 Texas A&M past Ole Miss for a 41-38 victory.

Defense shines as No. 10 LSU beats No. 17 Florida

Les Miles repeatedly dismissed the notion that LSU's defense was as vulnerable as it had looked recently.

For now, at least, he is a coach validated.

The Tigers were in Florida quarterback Tyler Murphy's face all game, batting down passes, racking up sacks and keeping their opponent out of the end zone for the first time all season.

Jeremy Hill did his part with 121 yards on 19 carries, and No. 10 LSU celebrated a vintage victory in Death Valley, 17-6 over No. 17 Florida on Saturday.

Connor Shaw accounts for 4 TDs, helps South Carolina crush Arkansas

Even Steve Spurrier felt badly about ruining Arkansas' homecoming fun -- at least a little bit.

The South Carolina coach, however, wasn't about to complain about a complete-game effort in a 52-7 win over the Razorbacks on Saturday.

SEC gets record 8 in AP's Top 25

The Southeastern Conference set a record Sunday for most schools in The Associated Press college football poll with eight ranked teams.

The Top 25 was shaken Sunday after seven ranked teams lost, including five to teams that were unranked or lower ranked. Stanford dropped eight spots and Michigan fell from the poll.

The top four was unchanged, with No. 1 Alabama receiving 55 of 60 first-place votes. No. 2 is Oregon, followed by Clemson and Ohio State. Florida State moved up to No. 5 to set up a top-five matchup at Clemson next week.

Stanford, which had been top-five all season, lost 27-20 at Utah and dropped eight spots to No. 13. The Cardinal's Pac-12 and national title hopes took a serious hit, though they'll be able to get right back in the conversation next week by beating No. 9 UCLA at home.

No. 24 Auburn moved into the rankings for the first time this season to join No. 6 LSU, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 14 Missouri, No. 15 Georgia and No. 22 Florida from the SEC.

Missouri (6-0) jumped 11 spots with its first statement victory since joining the SEC, a 41-26 win against banged-up Georgia. But the Tigers lost quarterback James Franklin to a separated throwing shoulder. The senior will miss the rest of the regular season, a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy on Saturday. Franklin's replacement is Maty Mauk, a redshirt freshman and big-time recruit.

The record for most teams from one conference in a regular-season poll had been seven, done many times, including this season by the SEC. The ACC and Big Ten have also reached seven ranked teams in season.

The SEC also had eight teams ranked in the 2011 preseason poll.

UF loses RB Matt Jones for season

Florida coach Will Muschamp couldn't recall going through a season like this one.

The 22nd-ranked Gators will be without running back Matt Jones for the remainder of the year, the latest addition to the team's lengthy injury report.

Jones had surgery Monday morning to repair torn meniscus in his left knee. He was injured during Saturday's 17-6 loss at LSU.

Bristol Speedway to seek NCAA mark

Tennessee and Virginia Tech will finally play a football game at Bristol Motor Speedway, and they expect to set an attendance record in what is being billed as the "Battle at Bristol."

Track and officials from both universities formally announced the plans Monday amid confetti and fireworks during a festive news conference at the 52-year-old racetrack. The game is scheduled for Sept. 10, 2016.

"I full well believe we'll play in front of the largest crowd to ever watch or have watched a football game -- that's college and pro," Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver said.

Bristol Motor Speedway general manager and executive vice president Jerry Caldwell said seating capacity for the game would be in excess of 150,000. The track sits nearly halfway between the campuses of the schools, off Interstate 81 in Tennessee.

The NCAA-recognized attendance record for college football is 115,109 and was set last month at Michigan Stadium for Michigan-Notre Dame.

    Recruiting director suspended 5 days

Georgia handed director of on-campus football recruiting Daryl Jones a five-day suspension over a number of minor recruiting violations that it reported to the SEC.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported Monday that UGA athletic director Greg McGarity sent a letter to SEC commissioner Mike Slive on Sept. 30 detailing how the school committed violations with a number of mailings to high school juniors.

McGarity wrote that recruiting staffers mailed letters to multiple prospects at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 30, two days before the Sept. 1 date when NCAA rules dictate that juniors may first receive mailings. At least 12 recruits received the mailings the next day.

"It was their assumption that if the mail was dropped off at the post office late enough on Friday afternoon that it could not be delivered to the intended recipient prior to Sept. 1," McGarity wrote in the letter, which the Banner-Herald obtained through an open-records request. "However, some of the prospective student-athletes did receive these mailing(s) on the very next day."
