I'd be great if you could though, right? Some of my friends work at the studios and they have lots of booze you can drink during the day.

    maybe i'll flask it.

When I left Southern California, my mind was so tight, I thought these people here were hicks. I liked it immediately, but it took a couple of years to become like them. Ever since, when I drive into the big city, my mind has to tighten up again to survive the streets and freeways. I just hate it there and get out fast, within hours.

I rarely drive during rush hour - and then it's typically only on a Friday afternoon if I'm meeting someone for drinks in SE. I hate it. Portland's not even big, but the traffic sucks more than enough. When I first moved back here I worked in the 'burbs and had to drive - though I rode a motorcycle which made things a little quicker. If I still had to commute to the 'burbs I probably would have jumped off a bridge by now.

I've been wanting to work for myself for a while now...just have no real marketable skill.

I wouldn't mind working with my hands (and yes, I know that this will lead to jokes)

My future has to be one of self employment or I will go insane.

I can do art. Someone give me money.

As someone who commutes an hour each way to work every day, I can totally believe this. Thank god I can take BART and don't have to drive in/out of SF during rush hours, but none the less those two hours are like two extra hours of work. Except sometimes they can be much more stressful than your usual work hour. Really hard to maintain while getting enough sleep and trying to fullfill yourself outside of work.

The Rat Race totally blows. I think I'm stuck in it for a while, but since I got in I've become much more serious in thnking about following my friend up to Washington and throwing all my cash into starting a brewery with him.

I don't mind doing self employment and a side job. For a similar reason too (sanity).

but I have this going for me. I have no dependents, and I only have to worry about myself.

I don't think you have to be "good" at anything, you just need to find the right niche. Listen to a bunch of podcasts, a lot of these guys were just regular dudes getting laid off and needed something to do.

Why don't you just do what that guy in the movie "Into the Wild" did? Seemed to work out well for him.

Portland now has over 35,000 people working part/full time getting paid under the table. Then they collect all forms of government tit money and live a fine lifestyle. This can be done anywhere.

Some do, some don't. Look at that smartpassiveincome guy..he's an outlier but it can be done. Even if you can't, the podcasts are pretty motivating.

I have been a freelance employee since the spring of 1999......... As stressful as it is to hope you get those calls for work, it is great not getting up, putting on a suit and going into an office.

What do you do now? Is it something you can do from home or online?

Call me crazy; but I would actually love to live in the Forrest with a few acres cleared for farming. I would love to have a fully integrated power supply; using the methane gas I produce from pig shit. I would like a stream flowing through that supplied me with good drinking and agricultural water.

All my equipment would be DC powered; which would run on marine battery series. I could live "off grid" and be free from this so called "rat race". I actually hate having money. It truly is evil!

Oh and I forgot... I would make sure to stock up on magic mushroom spores that I would spread throughout my property; just in case I need to travel to the spirit world. And the 6 sheets of quality CID.
