Looks like the Isles are serious.:MARIS61::lol:
Seems like alot to give up for a guy you aren't guaranteed to have after the year. Plus they still have Nabakov.

Yeah, they better lock him up if they're giving up all that. They have the cap space to do it though.

.....and a 2nd. Well they are trying to win and they don't have not goalie

    Very risky move

what? i like Vanek, but Moulson is already a proven 30+gl scorer. Even if Vanek is better, is he a 1st rd pick better?

Agree 31. And Moulson is signed thru next year with only a $3m cap hit

Vanek will want 7m a year

Great move for Buffalo. They rebuild and get Moulson?
They are going to lose Vanek anyway. Isles 1st and 2nd are usually pretty high also.
There is no guarantee Vanek will stay with the Islanders.

and with Moulson being a proven 30gl scorer i am certain they can get a good haul for him at the deadline. So they'll end up getting a lot of rebuilding pieces for a guy that was going to leave at the end of the year.

Maybe they'll go ahead and trade Okposo and another 1st for Miller.

Moulson and Vanek are both UFA's in July....I thought he had one more year. With the picks its still a big price for a UFA

I don't see the point of this move at all.

Never a big Vanek fan. He goes into 20-25 game slumps where he is invisible. Moulson always seemed to score against us.

Are the picks a lot to give up for Vanek...yes. But you have to give the Isles credit for taking a shot. Vanek is better than Moulson, so that is an upgrade. Worth giving up two high picks...most likely no, but the Isles are better today IMO. They were already a good team, and now they are better.

I am sure they will focus on a goalie now as well.

The Isles will be a team to watch moving forward. With their arena issues settled they will be a player moving forward. This moves shows they are in it to win it. From that POV good for them, even though giving up the two high picks seems like too much.

And the picks won't be high in the rounds. Best case we are talking a mid 1st round pick. That is a good pick, but it certainly won't be a top 5 or so pick. Risky, and one could argue too much, but they didn't deal a top 5 stud pick. Let's not forget that.

Yea, he's inconsistent, and is going to want/get a boatload in the offseason. Just a dumb move.

So they get 1st and a 2nd plus Molson for a guy they were going to lose at the end of the year. They can now trade Moulson as well and get prospects/picks for him. Not bad for a player that was going to leave.

    Islanders are just dumb.

No doubt they gave up a lot, but they also got better as a team now. They are taking their shot. I know some in here think picks are automatically going to be good players, but who knows. The Isles have good young talent, so they are saying let's get better as a team now, give up mid 1st and 2nd round picks to do so, and take a shot. I won't rip them for that.

Unless the team falls apart and that becomes a top 5 pick, very unlikely, I give them credit for being bold rather than always builidng for the future and taking mid round picks and acting like they are gold, or automatics.

IF they are better with Vanek, IF, are they MUCH better? no. They're marginally better, if that.

Since Moulson became a full time player in '09-10 he's had:

    30gls
    31gls
    36gls
    15gls

In that same span Vanek has:

    38gls
    32gls
    26gls
    20gls

So again, even if they are better, its not by much and def not a 1st rd pick worth. I'd probably say they're equal and lost a player who's played well alongside Tavares for years and may have lost some of that chemistry.

Dumb move because they gave up a 1st rd pick to get a player in an area they were already good in (offense) instead of using it to improve an area they are weak in (goalie). Dumb.

If this was their "go for it" move, then LOL at the Icelanders.

I agree with the call that it wasn't the best move, but I would expect Vanek to put up better numbers (more than marginally better) than Moulson if they play Vanek with JT. Keep in mind that Moulson put up those numbers riding JT's coattails, while Vanek put up his numbers kinda by himself.

Again, I don't like the trade if I'm an Islander fan, but I think Vanek is more than 'marginally' better that Moulson...

Even if Moulson was a creation of Tavares, you're still getting 30+gls year in and year out, so why mess with that and give up a 1st rounder to boot? There's something to be said for line chemistry and Moulson/Tavares definitely had that.

If Sather took one of our D and packaged him with a 1st and got another defensive defenseman, we'd all be wondering WTF is going on and why he didn't use those assets to get a forward.

Who has Vanek played with? Did he have Tavares on his line? Moulson certainly did. To me Vanek is a better payer than Moulson. The Isles are better. Now I agree they aren't CRAZY OVER THE TOP so much better, but they are better.

I give them credit for taking the shot. Good for them. I do think they gave up a little too much, but I also think picking in the middle of the 1st round is no given, so why not take the risk to get better and see how it plays out.

    Good for them.
