The Red Sox will officially extend qualifying offers of $14.1 million for one year to free-agent center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, shortstop Stephen Drew and first baseman Mike Napoli, general manager Ben Cherington said Monday afternoon, hours before the deadline for such actions. Each player can choose to accept the offer and play 2014 with the one-year deal or test free agency. If and when they sign with another team, the Red Sox receive a compensatory pick in the next first-year player draft. "Hopefully we'll be able to retain all of them," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "The reality is that might not work out." Notably, the Red Sox did not make a qualifying offer to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is coming off a breakout offensive season. The Red Sox could still bring him back at a reduced price and longer term. Read more http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story...coby-ellsbury-stephen-drew-mike-napoli-offers
