it's easier to continue a negative stereotype of the 100 levels seats, because it makes a neat story. I've never been told to sit down, or looked at bad when I go to a game (in the 100's or if I'm lucky, the 200's). Sure, are there old farts who want you to sit down? Yes. But are they the majority? not in my experience.
Thanks for your response. I cant say I agree with it, but good to understand a differing point of view. I guess the only parts that I'm "taking issue with" (for lack of a better phrase, are 1) is the organic part. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding though. I guess I can liken it to a band. A band can organically write music and play some of their "hits" each concert, but new songs are added the longer the band is around, while old ones get put on the shelf, or are played at a less regular rate. The same is true of songs in the North End. Songs that are around today, that werent around in '09 when I first started going to Timbers matches - Onward Rose City, Party in Portland, Tetris, Bury me in Green and Gold, Somos Timbers, Allez Allez A-Lo (we are the Rose City), Keep it Up Rose City, Bella Ciao, etc... and ones that were sung have been pushed out as there isnt enough time in a game to sing everything. But like I said I could be misunderstanding, cause you mentioned Like mentioned are Sunshine, and Wise Men. The other part is about singing no matter what. And absolutely that is done. The soul purpose for the singing is to encourage the boys to give it their all. When down by 3 goals, we wouldnt want them to quit trying, so why would we expect them to not give up, if we already have. To me its not Forced, but its a way of showing your love for something, and telling them "no matter what I have you back, I'm going through this with you winning or losing" Its not easy to sing when you are down 3 goals (I've been there in enemy territory in Seattle down 3-0 and it was like slowly watching my puppy die, but dammit that was my puppy that I adore and I'm going to be there with it until the end.) But I assure you nothing about me or 1,500 of my other friends who kept singing until the final whistle, was forced. The Timbers sucked that evening, but they were our boys, and we will support them. (Management is a different deal, their job is to put a good team out there. All we can ask the players to do is give their all) There was a saying that developed over last year's debacle. "PTFC, last in the league... but first in our hearts!" thanks again for putting up with my rant, and your opinions brother.
Who the fuck does that? Seriously? "Oh traffic." Shut the fuck up and enjoy the ending of this game. Do you not sit in your seat and hope that's it close? I actually do, because I love being in the arena when it's that close. Give me the damn tickets if you don't want to see a close finish. (Obviously, this is not towards you.)
You're right, it certainly was a lot quieter during the first three quarters. It's like that a lot now, unless we're playing the Lakers or Heat....and now it's to the point at those games where the bandwagon LA/Miami fans are louder than us at times. I've never seen so many as I did last year at the games. Must be the almighty dollar that drives ticket holders to sell their seats. Such bullshit! Come support your team! I love the impromptu chants. Are they the same ones each time? Pretty much, but no one's being directed by a video screen or announcer to chant along. The music/drums/horns/whatever has stopped playing every single time the teams come down the floor, which is awesome. I LOVE to hear the players on the court and the crowd murmuring. Reminds me of being a kid at the Coliseum during the WCF/Finals runs in the early 90's and actually getting to hear the game itself and not digital noise all night.
You know what's really funny? Maybe funny is the wrong word, but you just have to laugh seeing parents take their kids out near the end of the game without seeing what happens. If I was one of those kids, I'd be pissed! That is some bad Blazers parenting right there.
Some of those times I am sure the kid is the one wanting to leave, so it could go both ways. But still, why people stay for 47 minutes and then the last minute of a 1 point game leave, never made sense to me and just infuriates me.
That happened to me ONCE, when I was about 6 or 7, going to a White Sox game, they were down 3 or 4, and family friend we went with wanted to leave, they were driving. So we all file out of Comiskey, get to our car, hear fireworks for a HR, get in the car, of course, they came back. Since that day, have refused to leave a game early, I don't care the score. Had been slightly tempted that Brandon Roy-Dallas playoff game. Was like the first nice sunny day of the year, we had a friend watching our little girl, and we sat there watching us get our asses kicked, and the whole time was thinking damnit, I could be out at the park or somewhere with my daughter instead of watching this piss poor effort. But, of course, had to stay. Glad I had.
If the kid is the one that wants to leave, then the parents have to make the right decision and STAY!
I was working a high school baseball game behind the dish umpiring, and I was checking the score on my phone between innings. The inning that took the longest, when I got back to look on my phone, it went from down 20 to us winning. I had to contain my excitement, but that was awesome. lol.
I'll stay for a close game . . . I'll usually leave early when the game has been decided. What I find funny is people get so upset when people leave. Who cares? Let them leave . . . makes for less traffic and being home quicker anyways. People are paying over $100 for a game, they are entitled to leave when they want.
I guess if they don't want the full experience and cheat themselves out of their own money, be my guest. I laugh at them when the game isn't decided by the end of the 4th. (I'm looking at you Miami)
I never leave early and I never will (barring an emergency). I don't get the point of going at all if you're going to leave early.. I'd give my tickets to someone who was going to stay and enjoy all of it. Would you leave early during a movie, play, or concert? I sure as hell wouldn't unless it was painful to be there.
I got no problem leaving a few minutes early if the game has been decided. I get home in less the half the time v leaving after the final buzzer. The point of going, even if you leave early, is to catch a basketball game. Why would I give my tickets to someone else because I'm going to miss a few minutes of garbage time?
the wife and I usually made it an event--showed up early, stayed late. Even though (or because?) we had a 3hr drive ahead of us.
