The UFC didn't always have weight classes. They were introduced slowly. It's only in recent years that the company has grown enough that it can accommodate guys 155-lbs. and smaller. When Dana White and the UFC decided to add a women's division they picked the weight of the best fighter (Ronda Rousey @ 135-lbs.) and built it around her. Most of the women in the UFC find 135-lbs. heavier than they'd otherwise be fighting at. As such you have women like 5'8" Amanda Nunes in the same group as 5'3" Rosi Sexton. Now that the division is starting to fill out (15 fighters and counting) the UFC is looking to add another to make things a little more fair--and to their credit they're going about it the right way. Instead of offering a 125-lb. class (that virtually every female on the roster could make) the UFC is looking to add a 115-lbs. strawweight class, the 20-lb. difference ostensibly eliminating the chance that huge weight-cutters can take advantage. Invicta FC and the Jewels division of DEEP currently have most of the smaller women on their rosters. American Top Team's Jessica "Jag" Aguilar is regarded as the top strawweight. Felice Herring, Bec Hyatt, and Claudinha are three more the UFC would likely look to sign. Other than Sexton a few possible UFC fighters who would make the drop include Alexandra Albu, Jessica Andrade, and Bethe Correia. The second weight class would also enable the UFC to run another season of The Ultimate Fighter with women who were too small for TUF 18.
