In this case, I would say it's the opposite. The actual history is far more devastating and bigoted than our media details or highlights. But regardless, societies are built on their past, and if that past is really racist or just perceived as racist, the society will reflect that racism by either embracing the racism or admonishing their previous views. Luckily, we are in a society that for the most part wants to grow past earlier racism.

Only in a vacuum. Words have context, and it's generally accepted that one word is worse than another.

So your problem is really with the people who accept that premise, which is most people.

So can't we just cut to the chase? Go ahead and list all the societal ills that you believe contribute to this incorrect mindset and we can let this thread die.

If my white friend playfully calls me a honky, does that make anyone angry?

    Weird

all words are equal for the reason you stated

I'm not talking about value, though, I'm talking about contextual power.

but really you're just trolling me with arguments from the sex/gender debate, so nevermind.

value was the wrong word...in my defense, I am a little busy at work, and am using this for entertainment only.

Not trolling, but rather thought you would appreciate the fact that a lesson you taught me was put to use as well as retained

yeah to Trolling Brainiac a bit cause I like him

Words aren't even equal in scrabble, let alone real life. Deciding to call people ProChoice or ProAbortion mean the same thing by definition, but in context completely change the slant of the statement. Yes, the value of any word is only a social construct, but as long as you aren't yelling it alone in the woods, it's exactly that social construct that counts. Does a tree make a sound if nobody is around to hear it? Words only have the same value if nobody is around to hear or even say it. It's what language is. A way to disseminate ideas, and with that, those words have value.
