Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who missed all of last season while recovering from reconstructive surgery to his left knee, injured his right knee during the third quarter of Friday night's 98-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and did not return. The 2011 NBA MVP was taken to the locker room at the end of the third quarter, putting barely any weight on the injured leg. Following the game, he left the trainer's room on crutches and appeared to be in considerable pain. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Rose will have an MRI on the knee Saturday in Los Angeles after flying there with the team. I made this thread so I can post it in our FB page, and post it as news in BullsTwo. https://www.facebook.com/pages/SportsTwo/38328333904?sk=wall http://sportstwo.com/content/216-Chicago-Bulls-on-SportsTwo
Wojo: Rose about two hrs away from an MRI Chicago star Derrick Rose is still a couple of hours away from getting the MRI on his right knee in Los Angeles. https://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA/status/404314104996720640
It is now being reported that it's a tear of the right knee meniscus. This is not normally as serious as an ACL tear, but still requires surgery. Rose will be out for months. I need to hear more medical opinions before I form an opinion on what the Bulls should do.
6-8 weeks before he returns to practice. That's the typical recovery regime for athletes. He's sorta turned into this generation's Gilbert Arenas. Signed the big contract, then got hurt and never put up the superstar kind of numbers after. Some people might point to Penny Hardaway. I really do not get the point of letting Nate go. He didn't cost very much. He would be a key player in the rotation for us right now. The risk was minimal to re-sign him and the reward huge. What's the worst case, he doesn't play much? Boo hoo? Whatever we do, transplant, we need a different strategy than long arms, defense, and 1 on 5 on offense. And we need a reasonable plan to handle the worst that can happen, because it inevitably will. Not just Nate in case Rose gets hurt, but Nazr or Boozer start at C if Noah gets hurt? What are they thinking...
I sure as hell don't know what they're thinking. If I were them, I wouldn't be thinking much 'cause I'd still be kickin' stuff. The torn meniscus and a return early in the new year makes things more cloudy than clear to me. As they did last season (to their detriment) they'll probably assume that Rose will return well in advance of the playoffs with ample time to help improve the team's seed. My problem is that this team isn't constructed to withstand Rose's absence. Ordinary fans will expect that this team will easily be able to match last season's 5th seed performance. I'm not nearly that sure. Last season's team had 2 alpha dog scorers in Robinson and Belinelli...they weren't particularly good, but they were prototypical, conscience-less NBA scorers. This season's Bulls has only Rose and now he's gone for 6-8 weeks. It's the classic decision. Do you fold or hold? I'm going to sleep on it.
Funny thing about Marco and Nate is they both ended up on western conference teams. Nate went to a team that won 57 last season. Marco to a team that won 58. Seems like the really good teams need guys like them.
I wanted to keep Nate. My point about Rose, even if it is 6-8 weeks, he hurt his good knee. Now both legs have had serious injuries. What will we see from Rose going forward? I also agree, this team was not built on doing without Rose long term. We were are .500 with Rose. Oh man, I hate to see what is going to happen now.
Kirk dribbles away the :24. At least they don't get the ball and a chance to score. We play zone defense, so we can hide Boozer and Dunleavy and Kirk. Try to keep the game close. Hope Lu can make the miracle basket at the end to win it. Just like our strategy has been since they fired Cartwright.
Bulls are at a crossroads for sure. I'm not seeing a clear path at this point. Our franchise guy has not been performing as such for several years now. They guy has been one injury after another. And he's cashing a fat check. Is it legitimate to consider amnestying him? Seems crazy, but can a guy with the injuries he's suffered earn that paycheck? His game always seemed unsustainable long term IMO ala Iverson. Iverson kept at what he was doing far longer than what seemed possible. Will be an interesting season. Sad really. We’ve been waiting a long time for an MVP level talent to lead this team to a title. We lucked into one already. Odds are it won’t happen again by sheer dumb luck.
Good points. I agree that it's hard to tell what the best road is from here. Of course a lot will depend on the details of Derrick's injury, which are still coming out. Right now I'm chewing on the following points: 1). Lots of people are pointing fingers at the FO for not putting a good enough team around Derrick and at Thibs for riding his players too much, but this has nothing to do with either. Ie, this injury doesn't de facto point to either of the two parties being negligent. The guy hasn't played for 18 months and his knee just gave after 11 games...without contact. 2). I'm not sure it really says anything about Derrick's previous injury either. We can't really talk about the "over compensation" story here given the circumstances. 3). We can talk about the fact that maybe Derrick's body isn't equipped to handle his style of play over the course of an 82 game season. Which raises serious doubts about what level he'll be able to play at when he returns, even if his recovery goes well. 4). Obviously it's hard to forecast, but I get the impression that the track record for recovering from this injury is pretty good. Westbrook, Randolph, Chris Paul, and Blake Griffin all had one and they're doing just fine. 5). Even supposing the Bulls wanted to be "ultra cautious" with his recovery.....would it still be a good idea to sit him the entire season? I think not. That'll mean almost three straight years of no professional basketball. At some point you have to think about the effects of atrophy. We've clearly seen this season that it can take a player like Derrick some time to get re-acclimated to the nuances of NBA ball. I'd guess it'd take him the entire year to "find himself" with a new style of play. At that point the best years of his basketball career will be behind him. 6). I don't think the prospects of doing a scorched earth style tank job will bode very well for the team. The rest of the east has had too much of a head start. And god, the bottom half of the conference is just fuckin' terrible. Toronto is leading their division with a 5-7 record! 7). Assuming his recovery goes very well, what can we expect to see from Derrick when he comes back, this year and beyond? I'm really not sure. At this point it seems overly optimistic for a guy like him to ever fully recover. Not with the way he plays. Can the Bulls realistically contend with a subdued Rose? When you put all this together, I'm really not sure what the best course of action is. Like Transplant, I'll have to sleep on it for a night or two.
I'm not fully up to date with the injuries suffered by Westbrook, Randolph, etc. Did they have a torn ACL in their other knee?
This might be a stupid instinct, but I'm not sure how much one has to do with the other. One thing I'm trying to withhold judgment on is how the various team elements have conflated to bring about this scenario. My interpretation of Derrick's play this year is that it's his game that needs the rehabbing not his knee, which is probably fine.
Well, it seems to me that guys who've had work done on both knees don't last very long. Greg Oden and Brandon Roy, for example. I was only referring to that bit of your post where you talked about guys who had injuries to one knee (I think one knee). As for his being injury prone, it seems to be just that. He was dinged up before he injured his knee in the playoffs. He only played 39 games. He's suffered a sore hamstring and sore knee this year and missed games, too (since preseason). I don't think you can fault the coach for playing him 31 minutes a game. On the other hand, maybe it's just that he really needs more help from his teammates and there is nobody else to carry the team but him.
Its not the coach. MVP level players (he's paid as such) play basketball. Oftentimes dinged up, as will happen over an 82 game season. http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/mp_top_10.html Roses' minutes seem appropriate compared to other heavy minute players. This guy is just a fragile player at this point. His game was build around violent, violent movements and his body could not withstand those long term, IMO. I'm not ready to sit through Team Rose / Bulls Org style injury drama, that's for sure.
1.) Could not agree more. 2.) I don't know either way on this one. Some sports exercise people I know tell me that it can happen like that but I doubt it can be proved and I'm sure there are differing opinions. I know that over compensation can happen when you have an injury and its hardly ever a good thing, but who knows if that was happening here. 3.) What scared me is I thought he was playing a lot smarter this year already. Not as many of the crazy cuts and horrific spills we used to see. I was happy to see him trying a 3 point shot. This new game needed work though. 4.) / 5.) If history is an indicator, it will be Team Rose, not the Bulls, who will be more cautious, and the Bulls were seemingly comfortable with a reasonable level of cautiousness. It seems possible to me that his best basketball is behind him as well. 6.) Yah. Its not going to happen with this squad and this coach. Its going to be really sad. Not even any Nate this year to make things interesting short term. The East standings do look crazy. The Nets and Knicks were supposed to be decent to good! 7.) With health things, I can't say for sure, but its been a long time since we've seen a MVP level Rose. The guy I saw running around out there this year certainly didn't look like one. ---- I would be surprised if Rose didn't choose the longer term, longer recovery option. He's young and there is no financial incentive to not do what's best long term. Many cap-eating, guaranteed fat checks for Team Rose are locked in for years to come and plenty of time to earn the next contract.
I'm with GB. Even if Rose was MVP form this year, the roster didn't give me the expectation of a title or even getting past the 2nd round. The team put all its eggs in one basket (Rose), and not even LeBron with a better cast in Cleveland could win a title. If we simply tank, we have a lotto pick, eventually Charlotte's pick, and Mirotic to build around. To tank, we probably need to shed our better players; when you do, you can expect to get back players on rookie deals with potential and draft picks. All the better to try to rebuild. It's not like we've lost Rose forever or that he won't come back and even be an MVP caliber player. I see him like a eurostash or lotto pick - he may pan out or he may not, you have to take the risk to find out. It is silly to win 41 games and 1st round exit to have a 24th pick in the draft (or similar). That's not a pick you rebuild with unless lightning strikes.
