As an aside, I wonder what it is that compels us to reinvent our perceptions of athletes (and people in general) when they fall short of expectations and almost invariably view it terms of a failing of virtue or morals?

I'm still having a hard time getting over the PDX downtown photography fiasco. There were no details confirmed that lead me to think ill of him, but it was very suspiciously swept under the rug and made me highly question how genuine his whole "anti-bully" campaign was.

Seems for many, once they are no longer in a position to be a god to you, you find any way to break them down to distance yourself from them? I dunno. Like an ex-gf or something. looking for the flaws instead of remembering the good times. I can try, and think of issues I had with Roy. But most of my instant reaction memories are of good times from him. Well, and the one negative of him finishing with Minnesota. But overall, I think of game winning drives, shots, etc. and how fun it was to root for the team. Way moreso than oh, remember that time he bitched, remember that time he complained about X,y,Z, and then feel good about those days being gone or something.

Man, with the team 15-3 and coming off a win against the top team in the league, you're really having to dig deep to find something negative to post about.

Here's one for you. How about that Stacy Augmon? I heard he was a real prick and his teammates couldn't stand him. Discuss...

Which underscores why ALL PR bullshit should be viewed with a jaundiced eye. There's nothing wrong with the message, but remember why teams and athletes engage in it: they're selling you a product.

I remember articles by Quick back in the Roy years that said that the entire team would go out to dinner on the road, and how rare that was in the NBA.

Solid teams need an alpha. Roy was an alpha, but it didn't seem to impact the team on the court, and they actually played above their talent level, IMO.

I dunno, I truly feel Mixum is trying to engage in honest discussion over a standard off-day subject. Certainly, there is enough occasional mention of Roy on these forums that you can't say we don't need to, or shouldn't talk about him. Also, it's a valid point in so much that Roy's good-guy, family man persona off the court was a huge part of his identity here, and why so many fans loved him....

Or it could just be that boat trolling thing

Never met Roy but a guy whose restaurant I frequented in bend told me Roy was his kids hero and when he met him after the game Roy wouldn't sign his shirt. I thought that was kind of messed up, granted his kid was a bit of a spoiled brat, but I know if I was payed as much as these guys and had kids looking up to me I'd be all about giving back.

I think Wes Matthews is a prime off court example, a real hero for kids to admire.

I think both assesments are probably wrong.

Players make mistakes and they're not heroes. Expecting them to be paragons of virtue at all times and investing them with heroic qualities is a recipe for disappointment.

See this is bullshit. Some guy who knows somebody said BRoy was a jerk, so you post it.

I guess everybody has a right to their opinion, but let's at least get personal interaction with the guy before we start spouting off about him being an ass or him being the nicest guy this side of the pope.

The person who started this thread is known to toss shit out their just to get it stirred up. Don't know what the point of this thread is other than to kick dirt on B while he's down.

I can tell you the Roy was/is a quality human being, not just a player. I saw this guy take time out to sign autographs in the snow at 2AM in the middle of back to backs. Was always personable and polite to anybody he interacted with.

Trash threads like this are how rumors get started. Next thing you know that hack Golliver will read some of your horse-shit posts and say his "insiders" told him Brandon kicked over a little kids trike. It's forgotten on here, but these guys are regular people who just happened to be tall.

I'm talking about kids dude. I'm 27, I don't idolize sports figures but when I was in the 4th grade Michael Jordan was my hero. Kids look up to them and when they remember where they came from and give back it makes them hero's in my mind. More so then so.done who volunteers for the military to kill Arabs.

Another prime example of someone who give back is LeBron James. As much as I hate him on the court he is a very good person and does a lot for kids.
