http://nypost.com/2013/12/04/robinson-cano-had-seattle-meeting-with-mariners-source/ Isn't he one of the best players in baseball, i'd be shocked if he went there.
31 years old next year, looking for a massive contract. The Yankees would be smart to let him walk if he gets the 10 years he is asking for.
Mariners need a reason to get people to go to the games besides when Felix is pitching, makes sense for them.
This. Seattle, at this point, is where players go to cash in, whether to bump up bids or to die. In his case, it's the former. I will be shocked, SHOCKED, if he goes to the M's. Still, I hate the Yanks so I'd love to see it.
I think Cano might be the type of guy to actually go to SEA. 1) Offensive game not purely predicated on power (i.e. Sexson, Beltre, Morse, Morales, etc). But RF in SEA isn't as horrible as it used to be. It's not Yankee Stadium or Fenway, but he can still get his 20 HR and a boatload of doubles. 2) He's not a guy who has a "brand". He's not getting boatloads of endorsements while in NYC, so going to SEA isn't a huge drop. 3) Most importantly, this is probably his last contract. He doesn't have to worry about SafeCo deflating his stats a la Beltre and losing out on a couple of years of big contracts b/c of reduced numbers. He can take the most money now (8/210? 9/225?), which makes agents happy as well.
Oh, snap. From mlbtraderumors.com (If Cano is getting that much more cash, I can understand why he'd go to the M's, though, there go his chances of winning a ring, and I can't believe the M's would give him that kind of money, i.e. dumb idea): Mariners Willing To Pay Cano $230-240MM By Steve Adams [December 5 at 3:21pm CST] Robinson Cano flew to Seattle to meet with the Mariners in person today, and the team has informed him that they are willing to pay as much as $230-240MM on a 10-year contract, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com (Spanish link). It was reported yesterday that the Mariners may have topped the Yankees' offer of roughly $170MM, but if true, the reported $230-240MM offer would shatter the Yankees' highest bid. The Mariners met with Cano's representatives on Tuesday, according to multiple reports, but this appears to be the first instance of Cano traveling to Seattle to meet with club officials. Cano and agents Jay-Z of Roc Nation Sports and Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA are said to be seeking something in the neighborhood of $252MM. The Yankees reportedly will not offer Cano more than $200MM, and in the wake of that news, the offense-starved Mariners appear to have emerged as major players in the Cano sweepstakes.
He's not going to get over 200 million. with that being said, the mariners are getting over 2 billion from a TV deal in a few years, so we should start becoming players in free agency.
God damn, are you reading what the Yankee fans are saying about this on their forum? They really are the Laker fans of baseball.
Bidding against others (Yu, Hamilton, fielder) hasn't worked out well for them. Who else are they going to spend cash on? They just gave Willie bloomquist 6M. They have about 50M to spend to hit Lincoln's budget: probably much more if they're getting stars.
It's FANTASTIC in the short term in a win now. We have Felix/Kuma/Paxton/Walker as a damn good foursome (Though 2 are really inexperienced, it still helps 2-3 years down). And for an FA, not having to trade any of your starting pitching and have chips in Franklin for trade to upgrade somewhere else... It works for a win soon approach. Then, 4 years after that it sucks as he is now DHing every day.
